He's entitled to his opinion as we all are. What he's saying is basically correct but he could have been a bit more diplomatic about it and refrained from using our club and one of our players as examples.
Thing is, using the word 'mediocre' against a rival will always wind up the opposition, so actually his remarks are much more helpful to us when we play them at the Brit than perhaps he might have thought.

Loathe though I am to defend anything Arsenal related I think this is a translation thing to suit the hacks purpose. Bayern intimates that I think.
The article appeared in a German magazine and we are looking at this hacks translation. I suspect Mertesacker described us as middle of the table or middling type team, which we are. Use google translate and it'll come out as numerous translations of which mediocre suits the hacks purpose. Similarly Joselu is a run of the mill striker, he ain't no superstar - again, he is a middling striker - or 'average'. Suits the hack to use the word average for the purpose of his 'story'.
Why pick us - there aren't too many examples he could have drawn of transfers, the purpose of the article is highlight the large fees paid by PL clubs that benefits the Bundesliga in his view, rightly or wrongly. Also we are relying on the hacks lifting from the original story - I have no idea if its accurate.
Shock jock journey embellishes story to suit purpose. Collect his £50 and go back to anonymity.

Is this the same Mertersacker, who was torn to shreds by Diouf + Crouch last season.... It's the player who pussied out of a header so that mediocre Stoke could go 3-0 up before half time. I'm still annoyed about that game, a decent liner and we'd have won 5-0 no doubt.

Mertersacker needs to be torn a new Arse, after all,the one he has now must be very slack, after hanging around the other Arsenal players. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/3zptH1h3SvRnVmRGLyMP.gif)

He's just a shit Phillip Wollschied. Really really shit then? fucking awful that you come onto a thread like this where people are pissed off with an opposition player belittling our players and you find one of our fans doing exactly the same thing. fucking embarrassing of you really...in fact it's worse than what Mertesacker has done; you're SUPPOSED to be a fucking supporter! dick!

This doesn't even bother when it comes from Mertesacker because I wouldn't swap him for any of our defenders so for me its a bit rich when someone who gets away with being shite because he plays in a good team says things like this The guy has played much of his career at CL level as Werder Bremen captain and with Arsenal, plus the small matter of 104 international caps with Europe's greatest national team. I think it's a safe bet to say he'd walk into your team. And I'm not sure how playing at a big club makes you get away with being shit. On the contrary, such a step-up subjects you to greater scrutiny and all your mistakes get micro-analyzed. You can take the likes of Lallana, Lovren as examples.

Something is likely just lost in the translation of the seedy site from the original German interview. He has neither the provocative personality nor any reason to wind up any fans or insult a fellow pro, and while the notion of an Arsenal player being "obsessed" with Stoke (as some of you claimed) must be flattering, the reality is the guy has no such leanings.

I really dislike how personal his comments are towards Joselu. I'm not bothered about the rest of it because he's right that we're not a top club and he's obviously trying to use it as a slight on us and he knows that. Never in the history of football has such a mediocre player achieved so much and I won't be the first person to say this and no doubt people will have told him this directly. The issue is he could have kept the comment generic but decided to personalise it to an individual player, a Stoke player. An achiever he may be but smart he is not. We beat them at the Brit because of things like this and the togetherness of our dressing room. I assumed that they'd realised this and that was why Arsene was downplaying us of late to take the sting out of the game. This comment doesn't give us 3 points but it bloody helps.

We have the joint best defensive record this season, and the best since January. If anything, he gets overcriticized due to the obsession with his lack of pace and his qualities as an organiser and reading of the game and tidy distribution and calmness and discipline are forgotten to feed that exaggerated view. I'm not sure why some are so butt-hurt with the celebrations yesterday night. It was no different from what you'd see if Sunderland beat Newcastle or Spurs beat Arsenal or even when you beat Arsenal. If we can't celebrate a big win ib a key game, what do we watch football for? Get over your bitterness.

You can partly agree with what he said, I assume he picked Joselu because he was from a German club, but given the history between the clubs, probably not the brightest thing to do. They always seem to think that if they talk to the foreign press it won't appear in this country . Stokes the atmosphere up nicely.

I don't normally defend Arsenal but the word he used was 'mittelmäßig' which somebody has translated (probably via Google) as mediocre. Its truer meaning is probably more like 'middle of the road' or something like that. In the context of the interview, it probably suggests 'mid-table'. Not good but not as bad as is being portrayed. If I was Joselu, however, I wouldn't be happy about being described as durchschnittlich (average). I hope he gets the chance to tear Mertesacker one when we play them at home. Cheers, the transaltion confirms what I was sort of thinking/posting ![(thumbsup)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/q4Mqf5MqRwT9PY8UitYa.gif)

If you can speak the language, always worth going back to the original. Even so, Mertesacker should have known this and also been very careful about calling a fellow professional 'average' as if he's Franz Beckenbauer.

It's pretty easy to see our win and celebration riled you up so much - hence your bitter rant. Another free clue: at least keep your ramblings coherent and consistent. You cannot spew hateful bile about how arrogant we are and our delusions of being a big contender while vilifying our celebrating a win over Bayern. The hypocrisy of Gooners lauding it over their excellent win last night is breathtaking.
Just wait until the next time some 'lower' club parks the bus against them and snatches a win against the odds. They will be squealing like the bunch of girls they really are. What a bunch of fucking pansies they are.
