Mine is when we went to Majorca, me dad phones my Gran see how Stoke have done. Comes back first words out of his mouth, are "Stoke have sold Greenhoff to Man U & Bomber Sheldon as broken is leg". Did'nt even get the score it was all a blur, holliday was spoilt for me, still had a week to go, I was only 12.

The sale of Peter Beagrie. Maybe doesn't completely fit the criteria as it had been on the cards for a while. There have also been much bigger and more dramatic stories. It's just a random one I thought of cos at the time it was a real sickener and a bit of a nail in the coffin as we headed down the leagues. I think I was expecting this at the time but finding out about it on matchday (if I recall) was a kick in the guts. As you say, the nail in the coffin.

Most stomach churning.
Banksy's accident. Signing Hudson. (excitement) The roof blowing off. Selling Jimmy

I was up Hanley when Greehoff was sold to Manure. I swore I would not go again until Waddo resigned 'cos I thought it was his fault.I didn't stop going of course, and Jimbo was sold because of the Butler Street Stand insurance farce. Dark days loomed.

Most memorable for me was when Stoke Beat Brentford in cardiff to secure promotion to the championship
I was sat on a lawn outside a rather posh hotel in Sun City South Africa - a nervous wreck ringing home every fifteen minutes
and ,ODing, on Gin and Tonic

I still remember the moment I learned of the death of Kennedy (both of them), Munich Olympic attack, shooting of Pope, Iranian Embassy rescue, death of Elvis, death of Diana, Brighton bomb, destruction of the Sheffield, fall of Berlin Wall, shooting of Reagan, Dunblane, 9/11, 7/7, Lockerbie, death of Queen Mother.
Nothing SCFC related comes close - they are so piddlingly insignificant in comparison.

Was on a coach being driven to Lord Mayors Banquet in London as guests from the destroyer HMS London that was visiting the city. Spotted a plackard outside newsagents "Tony Waddington sacked". I was stunned.

I guess with my ridiculous memory, I can recall many significant and insignificant Stoke City moments but here are just some:
Standing outside Bill Hills in Lytham reading the Preston 'Evening Post' when we signed Tony Ellis and thinking 'thank fuck for that' after what seemed like an age for Bally to sign the lad - little did I know how shit he'd be.
Eating a take away as a student in Stafford and hearing on the radio that Stoke had made the deal for Mark Stein permanent on the same day as Ellis bagged a brace against Bury - too little, too late Tony.
Sat outside Kwik Save in St.Annes turning the radio up for Five Live's sports news expecting the announcement of George Burley as next Stoke manager only to hear he'd not turned up - I burst out laughing, what else was there to do?
Bumping into a fellow Stokie in beautifully sunny St Ives after just hearing we'd signed Bojan and telling said Stokie of the news - I am not sure he believed me especially when I said it was a permanent deal.
Running our shop in Far Sawrey and being phoned up by my aunt telling me we were on our way to the FA Cup Final as we were 3 - 0 up at half time against Bolton - I still thought we'd blow it.
Just so many good and bad memories supporting Stoke(and all worth it) - Gods, this has got my mind delving back through time and pulling up some great stuff...another one...jumping the turnstiles to get in the Boothen when we played West Brom 91/92 when there were plenty locked out - beers, chinese and a b&b the order of the night after Steino's only goal.
Great thread!!!

Making acquaintance with the Boothen End conveniences for the first time was fairly traumatic.
