I didn't go the game but I remember the sentinel football final headline that night as "Stoke thrill the Vale Park crowd".
I reckon I will still have the paper in the loft along with a load of other Sentinel football finals and other Sat night sports papers from around the country.

I was there with my dad standing on the tunnel side of Vale Park. Ian Moores scored, Huddy made it.

17th January 1976
Stoke City (0) 1 Middlesboro (0) 0 Moores 87 Attendance 21,009 (at Vale Park)
Stoke City: Shilton, Dodd, Pejic, Mahoney, Smith, Bloor, Robertson, Greenhoff, Moores, Hudson, Salmons (Lumsden) Middlesboro: Platt, Craggs, Cooper, Souness, Boam, Maddren, Brine, Spraggon, Willey, Hickton, Amstrong
Moores steered home Boam's weak back pass after earlier having one ruled out. Mike Pejic taken to hospital at half time with a stomach upset. Shilton tipped round Maddren's bullet header.
Must admit I don't remember Graeme Souness playing, I guess he wasn't such a big deal in his pre Liverpool incarnation.

Me, Railway Stand, about 2 rows back in the upper tier. You must have deep admiration for Middlesborough's game plan. Ian Moores ruined your day with a late irrelevance.

I was 19 before I met a Vale fan. If ever I went a Vale game I thought the crowd were all Stoke fans.

I believe Alan Dodd was from Norton, so he was playing top league football on his own doorstep practically.

I believe Alan Dodd was from Norton, so he was playing top league football on his own doorstep practically. I was in the year above Doddy's sister at school. At 11 years old I had a massive crush on her. I remember her bringing his England under-23 shirt round the school. Stoke's most underrated player ever in my book. Oh yeah, I was at the Vale that day as well. All I can remember of the entire match was the awful weather and a bit of a goalmouth scramble leading to the goal. A good result, but dark days for the club.

Cheers Marc, it's amazing how the mind fades away. I know what you mean, I was 13 and definitely attended this game but how I got from Mow Cop to Burslem I have no idea, nor do I know what colour socks I was wearing or if I had a pie at half-time, some people on here remember the smallest details from nearly 40 years ago, it amazes me

I was there too on that fateful day, but I seem to remember Souness scoring a 20 yard screamer in front of the Boothen around that time, maybe the season before or after, part of the reason Liverpool signed him. One of the most complete midfield players I have ever seen.
