I think by the letter of the law it would have been understandable if he'd sent off BOTH Afellay and Gardner, if one's goes, then the other one has to go also. Having said that, I don't think a single person would have raised an eyebrow if he hadn't even booked either of them and had just simply have given them both a ticking off for being such pussies - it's what I would have done. Adam had to go though. It's naivety and stupidity, though. I missed Gardener's tapping of Affelay's face at first and agree both should have gone, but that's sort of the point. Gardner gave him a sly tap, out of the sight of the referee and just enough to wind Affelay up. Affelay leapt to his feet and make a big fuss of putting his hand to Gardner's face, making the crime very obvious. That's why he was sent off and Gardner wasn't. Yup. Gardner was cleverer than Afellay. Adam wasn't clever enough. They were all at it.

Now they must some kind of stupid for not one of them to see it

People are saying that if Afellay went then Gardner needed to go too.
The thing is, even though Gardner "raised his hands", you could apply that definition if one player stroked another lovingly on the cheek. If I was out with my kids one afternoon in the middle of Hanley and touched one of them under the chin like Gardner did to Afellay, no-one would bat an eyelid. However, if I slapped one of them across the cheek like Afellay did to Gardner then I'd rightfully be getting a visit from Social Services.
What Gardner did was a sneaky act intending to wind up an opponent, but it had no aggressive intent and couldn't possibly cause injury. If we're advocating red cards for that then it's time to give up.
Afellay's slap was pathetic but it was fueled by aggressive intent. Whatever the rules are in black and white, I think the ref's used common sense to interpret them correctly. Red card the deserved outcome I'm afraid.
Similarly for Adam, there was no way he HAD to put his foot down on the opponent and press his weight down as he did. That's the kind of sneaky, cowardly shit that he has a reputation for and could have caused injury. Another deserved red.
We can have no complaints.

But there is something drastically wrong with the game when a petty little slap merits the same on the field punishment as a punch, headbutt, forearm smash or leg breaking tackle. In a sensible world Oliver would have told Affelay to stop being such a fucking mardarse and get the fuck on with it.

Fair enough, but a lot of folk were saying that they need to see it again. Clear footage on MOTD. Adam's left foot is FIRMLY planted to the ground, with his right foot on his leg. There is then absolutely no reason for him to lift his left foot off the ground and create more weight on his right foot. Sneaky and a deserved straight red. just how I saw it, charlie was a silly boy, didn't stamp but puts his weight on the foot on the players thigh ! not clever when your in front of linesman. on the affelay one, looktat the linesman by dugouts, he's shouting red card into his mike before oliver gets anywhere close . so both reds given or told to be given by the linesman. ...
