My dad ran the marquis in penkhull. Stand at the top of the bank on a night match and you could see the floodlights. Better than Blackpool illuminations. Anyone remember the jolly potter. Is it still there?.

I took many a route to the Vic: - bus up Hanley, Albion, Black Lion, Glebe - train from Blythe, Charlie's / Wheatsheaf / Bull and Bush / Vic or Club - car either Bourne Sports (pubs as above) or West End (name escapes me, just off London Road) Only thing that ever got cold were my feet! Bring back standing

Either train from Kidsgrove or taxi from Hanley or somewhere where I was, so could have a few beers around various watering holes around Stoke, memory isn't great and some of them may have been the same building but changed names, there was the sea lion, greys corner? the wheatsheaf, the glebe, the one at the end of the town hall car park next to where greenhoffs is now, uncle toms, but always ending up in the Vic pub opposite the old Stoke end by about 2.00 - 2.15, I bumped into one guy in Cologne who I hadn't seen in nearly 20 years mainly because of the ground move, all the guys I grew up with always use to stand in the same place in the boothen, you could go away for 3 months and then go to the match and see a lot of familiar faces, now I hardly see them. It seemed warmer because the corners were filled in

It's strange that nobody has started building on there yet, being private housing or industrial with it being so close to the M6 it's an ideal location

I never went many times due to work and the fact I was a late comer to the joys of real life football until my early 20s but in those visits I was encapsulated by the place I was as gutted as those fans who had been for years when it got knocked down. It all seemed a bit sudden when we moved. I often wondered why no one protested against the move to the brit.
Mind you the brit is fast approaching 20 years old so to many that's all they've known as home.

I think its new incarnation may have recently closed - I may be mistaken though. We had a spell of using the Cliffe Vale on Shelton Old Rd at one time, a good pint of pedi in there! Gone for a good while now that one. This thread has given me pause for some reflection this evening and I don't half miss the Vic.

Oh yes, the cliffe vale as well sometimes first one from the train station if we headed towards the sealion. How did a pub in the middle of the country get called 'the sealion'

I used to get there early. Parked up in Booth Street then went to play squash from 1.20 till 2.00. Followed up with a shower then a short walk to the Boothen End. Meet up with my brother inside the ground and get a drink before kick off. Happy days.
It could be cold, though. I remember one night match when it was so cold that my forehead ached like hell from the low temp.

Parking was never a problem. Most people had their own streets that they used - I used to park up in the street that runs around the back of St Peter's church. Short walk to the ground (via the Glebe, Vic, Uncle Toms Cabin ....), and a quick getaway onto the D Road after the match. Glebe, PMT Club, Vic stagger to the ground the smell of hot dogs and greasy burgers the flood lights on night matches, the proper turnstiles the feeling going up the steps into the real Boothen End, standing with your mates in the same spot every game the smell of smoke, fags sparking up the god awful bogs the feeling of belonging long gone sadly.

I don't think I've ever read a bad word about the Vic on here. Why did we move? Never a bad word from 8 yrs old with my brother then from12 with my mates catching the train from Blythe bridge, tasting the atmosphere from stoke station and back and the boothen end swaying and moving coppers helmets flying in the sky, great times . Where did it all go. I now catch the train from Bournemouth takes a little longer may I say. Best time of my life nots county away gaining promotion. We all love stoke.

That is exactly right. We stood within a few inches every match.

Yes, froze my tits off at the vic just as much as the brit.
The boothen end would be the best place, at the back where it was more congested.
