I was there. It was the coldest I've ever been. We need another of Sundays games though coz I'm on holiday and missed it. Twas indeed freezing that night Dave and I swear if the ref had disallowed that goal nobody would of seen the rest of the game and penalties as everybody got up and fucked off ( smiley ) Deffo Darlington and the season we won it It was v Darlington. Two games from when we were shit will live with me forever. That Darlington game and away v millwall when we lost 2-0 against 9 men. Jesus Christ they were low times

Didn't we have a really low crowd at home to Wycombe one season in a 2-2 draw? Sarge, that'd be 14th April 1999. As you said, game finished 2-2 and the attendance was a pitiful 6,569. The lowest crowd for a league game at The Brit. You look back now and it's hard to believe it actually happened.

We're lucky.
To truly appreciate these highs we have now, you have to experienced the extreme lows.
Not many clubs have finished 5th in the old first division, dropped down to the depths of the third division & back up to the Premier League in a 40 year span.

That today was for you folks Take a bow Make no mistake, mate, those were good days as well watching the lads, 8000 and often less. Not as glamorous granted, but we loved every game we ever watched Stoke play, and that's why plenty of us still there today, and will be there tomorrow, God willing.

Worst I can remember was a home game against Barnsley or Rotherham, some Yorkshire team in red shirts, anyway we're live on Sky, it's mid December and a midweek night match, I still talk my Dad into going. It's freezing, it's shit and I lose the feeling in my toes after the first 20 minutes.
Only highlight I can remember is Thomo goading one of their forwards into headbutting him and getting sent off. My Dad still doesn't let me forget I made him go.
The Saturday match that followed was one of those "sentinel specials" with cheap tickets and a load of our own fans singing "Where were you on Tuesday/Wednesday night" to those that'd taken advantage of them.
*Specifics not remembered, I was pretty young.

Did we ever win away against Barnsley ?
I lost count of how many wank results we had against them.
So looking forward to Bournmouth away next season. Have great memories of being wank against them too

Have great memories of being wank against them too GD In our promotion season we grabbed an injury time equaliser at Oakwell to draw 3-3. It was at that moment I knew promotion was on because we'd actually avoided defeat there.

I very rarely go now. I wasn't there sunday, the week before and the week before that but that's just circumstance. I'm not bitter. However this thread takes me back to the days from which my massive respect for my dad stems. Living in bridgnorth in shropshire we used to do the journey most weeks in the 80's and a fair few away games. Scarf pattering against the window. I didn't really care how shit we were i was just proud of the fact that i was a stoke city supporter and going back in to school on a monday i could say i'd been on an adventure to watch my team. Throughout the 90's the old man moved down south so it was train up to stoke. Some of the worst days for me were the early days at the brit. Horrendous stuff, awful football, shocking dead rubber atmosphere. I used to hate the place and started to resent it with it's lack of soul or character. The club is alive now, it's beautiful. Whether in attendance or not the passion still burns large and these really are wonderful days. Still got to shout out to all the exiles though, when most of the city didn't give two shits about the club there were still people travelling from all over the place. Those attendances would have been a hell of a lot worse without them.

Actually quite a lot of teams have that kind of profile (give or take a league position/year here and there): West Brom Swansea Man City Southampton Leicester Burnley QPR Stoke That's almost half the teams just from this year's Prem. Then you've got Watford, Blackburn, Wolves, Bolton...... Anyway it shows how cyclical footer can be for all but the very biggest clubs. As has been noted, we should enjoy it while we're atop a peak and not languishing in a trough.

This one has to be one of the lowest attendances (albeit away from home) we've had for a competitive fixture? www.11v11.com/matches/portsmouth-v-stoke-city-10-november-1987-290940/3,226 foolish brave souls in attendance. My hat is off to anyone who travelled from Stoke for that one (My Dad and Bro-in-Law did), I was there but I lived in Portsmouth at the time :D Can't remember much about the game, we'd been pissing it up on an Aircraft Carrier in the dockyard for most of the afternoon/early evening, my Dad loved going on the warships :)

Remember Southend coming to the Vic in the 90's. They brought about 10 fans & beat us. When they scored, all we could see from the Boothen was these 10 jumping around in the Butler Street corner, with the sound turned down. Worse than the 25 that Valencia brought to the Brit

Just by way of contrast, in 1962-63 season we won promotion as champions back into the 1st division (top division then). Our home game against Sunderland was in excess of 42 thousand.
The potential is there although there are more alternatives these days. Biggest crowd I remember was the centenary match against Real Madrid. I know we were packed in like sardines, I will have look up the attendance to make sure my memory isn't failing me.
Edit estimated at 52000, (it was easier to sneak in then)

Slightly irrelevant in relation to some of the attendances posted, but we only just broke 10k for a saturday evening KO vs top of the table Norwich (live on sky) in the 2nd tier only 11 seasons ago, and although I can't remember exactly I think it's safe to assume Norwich would've brought at least 1k with them.
Still, as embarrassing as it can be to look back to some of those shitty attendances the majority of our worst gates in living memory would still be considered bumper crowds for vale.
