I've got an orgone accumulator It makes me feel greater I'll see you sometime later When I'm through with my accumulator It's no social integrator It's a one man isolator It's a back brain stimulator It's a cerebral vibrator Those energy stimulators Just turn your eyeballs into craters But an orgone accumulator Is a superman creator

They tried to tame Doug and coiffeur his mane. It wanna happening. Too much Peyote... Still havn't been able to listen to 'Trout Mask Replica' from start to end. 'Big Eyed Beans' etc off of 'Clear Spot' is marvellous, what a fantastic album, summons up thoughts of a lost year in Chester..... My favourite track from that album, this week Beautiful. I still struggle with Trout Mask even now. I like Frownland though. The other early stuff is fine especially if you can find the version of the second album(?) with all the "psychedelic" + "trippy" effects removed. The "Head is my only House" track is beatiful. I've got Clear Spot in a twofer with Unconditionally Guaranteed which is class as well.

I hope no-one minds if I just go in a little 'Frank showing the world how to play guitar' overload for a few videos....
And my personal favourite 'Frank shows how it's done'...

I saw Frank twice. 1976(ish) at the old Bingley Hall Stafford after the agricultural show. Cow shit everywhere! and late 80's at the New Bingley when they played versions of Stairway to Heaven and Ravel's Bolero... oh and Cheap Thrills too!
Before my time in 1967/68, the Mothers played the Gatehouse at Stafford as well. I remember the school sixth form society running a trip.
There was a half decent Mothers tribute doing the rounds a few years back. Played the Wheatsheaf a couple of times. I forget the name.

I keep trying with Frank because friends with a modicum of taste keep recommending him. But he/it's generally a bit too fiddly/knowing for my taste I love the Mothers of Invention album 'Ahead of Our Time'.
Perhaps as I'm growing up I may grow into him. Too late perhaps. D'rather have Doug VV.
When Tung's camera shop in Hanley was shutting down I bought a stack of vinyl, a load of demonstration stuff, including Quadrophonic shit, and one of them had this beaut on....
... it gets me into momentary manic dancing...
Strange but sweet.... I've always been suspicious of his soup strainer.

Tung's camera shop. Like to haggle did Mr. Tung. And have a good listen to that Primeval's stuff! It's top quality shit, one of John Peel's favourite ever bands.

Who'd have thunk it eh? A cabal of Zappa/Beefheart fans on the Oatcake! Makes me think that posting a thread entitled "Anybody here appreciate the works of Samuel Beckett?" isn't such a crazy idea after all.

Persevere with Frank it's worth it!
I've been listening now for over 40 years since I first saw the cover to "We're only in it for the Money" and it's enhanced my life immensely! Didn't do much for my social life or attract many women though.
There is a certain amount of insider type tomfoolery that can be a bit off putting I know, and I haven't always agreed with some of Frank's ideas; his libertarian enthusiasm for the joys of unfettered free market capitalism seems a little naïve to me. He's not infallible either. He's at the very least, equally culpable in the ridiculous recording/production techniques that spoil Trout Mask.
For all that, and given the sheer volume of his work, I'd imagine there is something somewhere in there for everyone!
I think the live section on "Ahead of our Time" was recorded on the 67/68 tour I mentioned earlier.
The "Watermelon in Easter Hay" above is pretty sublime stuff. Similarly Son of Orange County or Black Napkins but if manic dancing is your thing try this...

With all this Beefheart and Zappa flying around, it seems appropriate for The Butthole Surfers to make their Unholy debut.
And this, produced by no other than John Paul Jones - to complete the circle.

I'll keep having a scan of Frank, it's a musical mission I've set mesen. Understanding why I don't quite get Zappa. Or finding out that I do. My pile of Zappa to go through at the moment is: Zappa Picks as recomended by Fishman of Phish. Waka/Jawaka Cheap Trills Son of Cheap Thrills In the meantime this might be the best thread for something more visceral. Jim Dandy. Everything I abhor in music brought together to create summat that's mint. Ludicrously brilliant. Kick friday night in..

Just working through some of this thread again, some cracking stuff that I don't know a lot about, but have been recommended in the past. I was given a copy of the Calvert album but have only listened to it a couple of times,, and it mustn't have grabbed me. And similarly I've heard Butthole Surfers stuff but always had the impression that they were a bit too awkwardly quirky so I've never persevered.
I love Gil Scott-Heron's stuff, a big regret was that we turned up at Bar Cuba in Macc in about '95 to see him but he'd been detained by Customs so just his backing band played. It was a tenner or so, so we went on the Ale around the town instead. The track above is a difficult watch, more affecting than 'Hurt' Johnny Cash perhaps.

Again, great music here! That Butthole Surfers stuff is creepy stuff I need to listen to again. I can't quite get past the image of Beavis and Butthead watching them though,
Butthead: " Huh hur...This rocks, Beavis! huh hur................ butthole, huh hur" Beavis: "Heh heh... I am the great Cornholio, bring me some TP for my bunghole" Butthead "Shut the f**k up Beavis... huh hur"
BTW I've only just "got" Popa Chubby. Slowing down in my old age! Rockers stay juvenile forever then.
Gil Scott-Heron, another genius! And that Groundhogs further back could have been recorded last week!
Mud though ..... meh...

Maybe my favourite Primevals tune. I love their slide guitar up tempo rock'n'roll. When you're in the right mood these tortured Glaswegian boys are the damaged goods band.

I'll see your mock '50s "Mud" and raise you these two Mothers pastiches!
The less than PC "Big Leg Emma" , a later version of the 60's single:-
and "Cheap Thrills" from "Cruisin with Reuben and the Jets":-
