I think some were corny and cheap. Some could have great production values, nice locations, costumes etc. The devil rides out is one of my favourites and I liked their version of Quaternass and the pit. I seem to recall the TV series was a bit hit and miss.

As a Sherlock Holmes affectionado ( as was Peter Cushing ) the Hammer production of " The Hound of The Baskervilles " from 1959 , which also starred Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee was one of the better versions of the story .

Brought up on a friday night diet of Hammer. Strange rather than scary... The original Mummy. I liked them when they got a bit psychedelic towards the end. The Witches, 7Golden Vampires and The Wickerman. There's a Horror Channel on Freeview. I liked the Abbott & Costello versions too.

Fantastic films......One under-rated film was 'The plague of the Zombies'..brilliant but you don't hear much about it. Another film, though it wasn't a hammer production was 'The Witchfinder General.. That film freaks me out even now. Dark and disturbing

As a Sherlock Holmes affectionado ( as was Peter Cushing ) the Hammer production of " The Hound of The Baskervilles " from 1959 , which also starred Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee was one of the better versions of the story . I'd have to agree on that, it's possibly the best alongside the Rathbone version. Mind you, I like the HOTB versions with Ian Richardson and Richard Roxburgh as well. There's one with Matt Frewer (Max Headroom) which is kind of ok. Then of course there is the Jeremy Brett version too. Peter Cushing also did a version of HOTB for the BBC back in the 60s. It's pretty good, a bit stagey (but that can add to the atmosphere) I'm a bit of a completist for The Hound story, Ive pretty much acquired on DVD every version of it bar the dreadful comedy one with Dudley Moore which I just WONT entertain!! There's one with Tom Baker which I only recently found on YouTube and downloaded off it. The only other Hound adaptation of note is one with Stewart Granger as Holmes. I believe it's pretty poor and I can't track it down anywhere not even on Youtube. Going back to Jeremy Brett, I also liked the one with the vampire, think it was called The Last Vampire??
I like the Holmes movies with an alleged supernatural twist like The Hound. One of my favs is one with Rathbone called The Scarlet Claw, it's got a very strange 'monster', good fx for its time and it's very atmospheric with lots of fog!! I would highly recommend especially if you like HOTB.

Dark and disturbing That was a good film ...is it the one starring Vincent Price you are referring to ? He portrayed Mathew Hopkins didn't he ? Witchfinder General; Brilliant movie. I'm sure it might be on Youtube too! I would love to see it remade by somebody like Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers), who could do it faithfully but add modern levels of brutality.
Let's give a shout to another non Hammer film that was worthy of the brand name, The Wicker Man with Edward Woodward.
Nah, I love Hammer; just so atmospheric, the sets, costumes, some really good fx too for the times & budget. I love how so many of the outside settings are actually stage sets, it just so adds to the atmosphere. Some of my favourites are The Gorgon, The Reptile, Satanic Rites Of Dracula (one of my favs with Chris Lee, set in modern day and more gory than usual), The Hound Of The Baskervilles, Plague Of The Zombies, Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter, The original Dracula from '58 and The Mummy. I also like the older B&W ones like The Quatermass Experiment and X The Unknown (love that film, great atmosphere, innovative monster). Pretty sure these are all on Youtube, Id really recommend The Gorgon, The Satanic Rites Of Dracula and X The Unknown.
Another british scifi horror I would recommend is The Nightmare Man, a four part BBC series from 1981. A very unusual 'killer' on a remote Scottish isle. Again bags of atmosphere, sure it's on Youtube. Also BBC's Day Of The Triffids from 1982, again another series.
Oh, and to end on, not Hammer..but probably the VERY best B&W horror film of all time; Night Of The Demon (sometimes goes under Curse Of The Demon)

Whats the film when a character recieves a piece of paper and something kills them, but they hear something coming towards them along a railway track or something like that, before they die? That's the one I'm on about; Night Of The Demon, sometimes known as Curse Of The Demon. Love it! The papers contain Ancient Runes that are used to conjur a demon to kill them. You have to pass the paper with the runes on, on to your enemy, without them knowing. So many great atmospheric scenes in that movie, the footprints in the woods, the storm at the children's party, I even like the demon fx at the end of the movie.
It's based on an old MR James story, Casting The Runes. ITV did a version of it back in the 70s with Ian Cuthbertson. It's ok if a little hampered by a modest budget. Not anywhere near as good as Night Of The Demon mind.

I've got most Holmes films on DVD .....For me Jeremy Brett is the finest Holmes ever , truest to Conan Doyle's original character ....Basil Rathbone was excellent , but quite a few of his films were made during the war and were used as part of the war effort ....well almost as propaganda films ....although watchable not as good as Holmes in his element of Victorian England .....the Jeremy Brett one you mention also starred Roy Marsden as the sinister character that the title suggested ....very good .
