Is there not an argument for saying that Shaqiri was a mutually beneficial bit of PR? We cook up a deal with his agent to put a bid in that meets Bayern's asking price. This forces Inter to match our bid and buy him outright, getting the player the transfer that he wanted and the agent the signing on fee that he wanted. In return, Shaqiri and his agent said lovely things about us in the press that made us sound like big players.
I doubt he ever would have signed.

I don't think we ever had a chance of signing him.

I'm definitely not saying I disagreed with it. I think it was brilliant.

Bojan cost a reported 500k Euro's. Palacious 8 million sterling. It is not all about the size of the transfer fee. Or the size of the player..........

If it was a PR stunt who was it for? Us?
The agent? Does Carto know him and was doing a favour in return for a favour on another one of his clients this summer?
Bayern? Hughes has contacts. Again, was it to bump up the price from Inter in return for a loan of a kiddie from Bayern II this summer?
Or did we pull our pants down and just fancy a bash at a big name?

Will we pay the big wages required to get these types of player?

I'd much rather be linked with players of Shaqiris calibre and get shot down than some of the dead ducks we've been linked with in the past. It suggests a belief we can aim a little higher, besides- nothing ventured nothing gained!

It doesn't matter who we're linked with if there's no chance of them coming here.

Peter Coates and the club are putting their faith in Hughes by offering him a 4 year contract - great news! - in every effort to keep him here
This should secure stability at the club, send out a message that we will be investing in additional players as well as a message that Hughes is "not for sale"
To be competitive in the transfer market, higher wages may have to be met - the revenue for final league position is probably worth it
A new chant for MH at our next home game would be great

It doesn't matter who we're linked with if there's no chance of them coming here. Who would have thought Bojan would come to little old Stoke. Its easy to say a player wont come but you have to give things a shot. At the end of the day money talks above everything else and we can compete with most clubs there. We cant offer Champions League football in the foreseeable future which is the reaon we will remain behind the Inter Milans of the world. It has NOTHING whatsover to do with a clubs history - players do not give a shit about such things.

Shaqiri had starred at the world cup and despite not playing regularly at Bayern was still one of the most promising young players in world football. Money talks a lot but players want to play at the top level and history DOES matter to an extent as it's part of what makes a big club big. Lennon choosing Everton showed that. We will always be behind the Inter Milans of the world unless a multi-billionaire takes us over or they go bust.

We're older.
You can have a club with more trophies playing in a lower league.
I'd say for the reasons above and playing in the Europa League were the main factors.

Everton are bigger because they have 20 million more revenue each year and are in the Europa League.
THAT is important for players.
The fact they won more trophies than us means sweet FA to a player looking to choose a club. I think we need to get this into our heads. History counts for NOTHING

I don't see the point in chasing rainbows. I didn't when Tone used to do it, I don't now. What I want is for us to sign quality footballers who suit the way we play and improve the team, whether they're from Barcelona or Birches Head.

Everton's history is woven into the fabric of who they are as a club and that makes a difference. It's part of what makes a big club big, the players who've played for them, the things they've won etc. It contributes to the perception of a 'big club' alongside the factors you mention and others. Of course history alone means nowt, hence you don't see big name players joining Preston or Huddersfield.

Not pie in the sky. Inter Milan wanted a loan with a view to a perm deal, Munich were not prepared to do that deal and wanted to sell in January. Stoke had agreed a deal with Munich to buy in January which was excepted, we were favourites to sign him till Milan matched our offer, so then it was just down to a decision for the player. Which is why it was pie in the sky. He was never going to come was he? He's one of Europe's elite players and was always going to go to one of the bigger names in Europe. Being 'favourites to sign him' doesn't mean a whole lot in that context. It's easy to forget we are now inside the top 30 clubs in the world financial muscle wise and climbing. It's easy to miss the fact we can now attract this sort of player. We are not little Stoke anymore.

Bojan could be pivotal in changing things but we are still lil' old Stoke in International terms. Shaqiri was always an exercise in pissing in the wind whilst some proper work should have been going on.
I'd look at a team like Basle who surely (regular Champions League income not withstanding) we could compete with financially? They have some fantastic players (yes I know they sold Shaqiri), great infrastructure and should be a club to look at rather than engaging in play fights with Inter over a Bayern Munich starlet.
