Bit more Jazz from the continent of Africa...................lived over here most of the time after escaping apartheid with Chris MacGregor and his Brotherhood of Breath...........a multi-racial band not much appreciated in their native SA in the '60's.

On the subject of Jazz, they have a live Jazz night every Wednesday 7pm till 9pm at Longton Rugby Club (Trentham Lakes so very near to the Britt). It's £3 on the door, they usually have a 15 minute break from about 8 till 8.15 so you're getting about 105 mins of live music for your buck. Also there is a fully licensed bar with a decent range of beers :-)
It's not a favourite genre of mine but I have been a few times with a mate and mostly enjoyed it. Some of it is a bit too laid back for my tastes but they have a couple of younger artists on from time to time who have a bit of oomph! One is a young lad called Ben Holder who is a virtuoso on the violin (almost like metal at times on it), he plays a really fast, technically demanding style known as gypsy jazz and it's well worth paying to see. He also sings & plays piano but the violin is his thing. They also have had a young(ish) double bass player on there called Jim Swynnerton who plays an upright, slap bass style; almost rockabilly. A lot of the artists are from out of the area and are at the very least semi pros or full time pros, there's usually opportunities for anyone in the audience with talent & instruments to accompany them for a song or two.
Here's a couple of videos of Ben Holder at Longton RC from a couple of years ago. Ben's also in a gypsy jazz band known as Gypsy Fire who bring acoustic guitars in with the violin as well. All good stuff even if not exactly trendy! You can't help but be impressed by the lad's talent and he's nowhere even near 30 yet. Grrrr....

Me an the missus plan to go a jazz club (is Trentham still going) stoned one day. I have never heard her laugh so much at anything. She's almost crying with laughter. She finds it hilarious people like a group of musicians all playing a different tune and taking it so seriously. She thinks its absolute cockwank....and I'm inclined to agree. Utter pretentiousness, pseudo-intellectual drivel. Just my opinion, for what I know (aka nowt) taste is personal Hey ho each to their own though. May those that love it continue to do so in a free world

On the subject of Jazz, they have a live Jazz night every Wednesday night It's good to know that such things are happening locally, I might give it a go one week. I've got to say that Fiddle Fiddling would break me suede after a few minutes, technically difficult it may be, but you can have too much of a good thing. I havn't seen a whole lot of live jazz, it's something I had planned to address, but having recently watched Polar Bear {who are rated amongst the top of the new Avant Jazz outfits}, I'll run at that particular mission with a little less verve. It amounted to nowt much more than an hour and an half of sterile, expensive noodling. I can fully agree with Bollo's missus' appraisal. A shame really because Polar Bear's other incarnation is/was Acoustic Ladyland. They have some vim... Gong? Now they are a different kettle of fish.

Gong onner jazz. They belong with King Crimson..Tangerine Dream and that ' genre' Nice Not sure about sticking Gong into any genre really. They do do a bit of fine 'parping' that could creep them into the 'jazz' sphere though. King Crimson, Tangerine Dream are beyond me. I don't know enough about them. Seen Daevid Allen {Gong} live a couple of times at the Talbot, Stoke. He always set some kind of Om/Zen tent/dressing/green room up in the garage out the back. Something else. He's an RIP now I think. Been immersing mesen in the Jazz Drum Battles on youtube. Elvin Jones, Art Blakey has got me hooked.

Elvin Jones bringing something more strung out and spatial to the table. But Art still just about nails it imo.

there's a fair bit of jazz around the potteries but it tends to be trad or dixie not contemporary stuff, Matt & Phreds (nightclub) in Manchester has jazz or R&B or jazz-funk virtually every night of the week then there's the annual Manchester Jazz Festival. Also google Radio Tunes and you can listen to different genres of jazz 24 hours per day (plus lots of other online stations ranging from Bollywood to Russian pop to Israeli pop - absolutely everything !!)

Elvin Jones bringing something more strung out and spatial to the table. But Art still just about nails it imo. Good list there.............. Max Roach was a key pioneer of Be-Bop with Parker, Monk and Gillespie. Be Bop was the father of all modern Jazz so Roach is key. Anyway, it's Elvin Jones for me..............he redefined the nature of drumming in Jazz ( just ask Mitch Mitchell ) with his multi-layered polyrhythmic approach.

Some sort of synaesthesia type thing I guess............haven't seen that, what is it called? Talking drummers Rashied Ali deserve a mention as a great drummer in Free Jazz ...... check out his playing in the Interstellar Space ( John Coltrane ) link that I put up earlier in your thread. Oh and...Milford Graves too in fact there is an interesting documentary about him somewhere out there too. He's an acupuncturist, herbalist and martial arts teacher and he runs around the woods near his house playing old trees and shit.....good stuff.

Jazz Police are checking out this thread The Jazz Police? What do they do? Nice concept. Are they pro or anti....Jazz? I'm surprised they didn't fall foul of the last round of cuts. Matching Mole, now Leonard Cohen {terrible Cohen at that.}. I reckon you'd be high up on their suspect list. Just for stretching the idiom, if nowt else.
