Based on that performance the Windies may be the first casualty of the Irish. Of course no one on here will remember this , but during the West Indies tour to England In 1969 , they went over to Ireland to play a non first class tour game and ended up being bowled out for 40 odd and getting soundly beaten ! ....it was possibly a limited overs game, but I do remember it happening ...astounding for that period . Bish - I'd not heard of this and was intrigued. So a bit of googling I discovered that your memory is playing tricks on you; guess it's old age? The Windies weren't dismissed for 40 odd. They were bowled out for 25! Consider this video clip a wee gift... A bit of cricket history.

Bit before my time! Just started watching Fire in Babylon (again). It reminded my what a poor side the Windies were before Lloyd transformed them. It also reminded me that I'd recorded the highlights of the warm up game. Oh, how sad is it to see a side that once could take any team in the world apart, look so sorry for itself. A strong Windies side would be great for world cricket. Unfortunately not before mine ! They were not that bad a side before Lloyd mate , When Sobers and Kanhai were captain , they were a good side ....lots of good players , themselves of course , Kallicharran, Lawrence Rowe , Roy Fredericks, Deryck Murray , Lance Gibbs , Wes Hall , Charlie Griffiths , . Lloyd just changed the way they approached their cricket , with his very cynical use of short pitched fast bowling to achieve results ......definate intimidatory with absolute intention of causing the batsmen physical hurt ( particularly English Batsmen ) ....it was very effective of course for a good Ten years or more , but at times it wasn't always good to watch with down to ten overs an hour at some point..I was very sorry to learn of the racial thing that was running through that side of Lloyd's in 1976 , in retrospect for me it takes something away from their cricket ....it wasn't just a case of winning , but their object was to humiliate England for other reasons than what happened on the field . I think you've got this spot on; the Windies had bags of talent prior to Lloyd's time as captain, he figured that deploying the full power of his fast bowlers was going to win him a lot of games. Not pretty, but very effective and, at times, exhilarating. (The TP of cricket?). The race context was also important in bonding the team - particularly against criticism of their approach, of which there was plenty. But this has to be considered alongside the politics of the late '60s and '70s. This was the time of Black Power - although that was in the wane as the mid 70s came in it left powerful legacies particularly in sport (Mexico 68). It was the time of the Notting Hill riots, Bob Marley and of course apartheid and Tony Greig's most unfortunate remarks. This fed into genuine feelings in the Windies of that time as it did in the wider community; it was just part of that time. If you like reading worth looking up I know why the Songbird sings by Maya Angelou published in 1969 to give you a feeling of the feelings at that time. Incredible anger - and you can see why. Remember, the Jim Crow laws were only repealed in 1965. They were very different times to today (in some ways at least) Bob Marley again "today they say that we are free, only to be chained in poverty". From Slavedriver.

That I still remember it at all after almost 46 years is a minor miracle in itself !....as low as 25 ? Amazing .

Well that was a busy day of cricket with some surprising stuff going on;
New Zealand thrashing South Africa
Zimbabwe beating Sri Lanja
The other games were more expected, Australia demolish the UAE, and England lose a close one to Pakistan.
Looking forward to the competition kicking off!

Zimbabwe look pretty handy.....beat Sri Lanka and had the Kiwis 120-7 with Guptill making 100 of them before rain came. They beat Australia last year in an ODI too.

After a terrible start, we've got them wobbling a bit at 70-3! Warner, Watson and Smith all gone. Start well, finish well and hold it together in the middle seems to be the key for success. Just got up and Australia now powering forward 274-5 off 44 overs. 330+ looks possible which will be enough. What gets me is England, who are the worst team (after Zimbabwe) for death bowling, continue with a lunatic policy of short bowling in the final 10 overs. Fair enough, we don't have the best players in this tournament. But, FFS, there is no excuse for brain dead, stupid cricket. Edit; After Woakes concedes 15 off an over of short pitched pish, Finn collects a wicket with the first ball of the next over with, guess what, a full pitch ball. Then, guess what again, he follows that with more shirt pitched nonsense that goes 4, 4, 4 and, because he's now lost his line, another 4 from a full ball down the leg side. Ridiculous.

Well 342-9 will (surely) mean Australia will win.
But a hat trick for Finn off the final 3 balls meant we kept them below 350. Note though, two of those three wickets (the first 2) came off full pitched deliveries.
A pyrrhic hat trick!

Some of the worst death bowling I've ever seen. The players are either braindead, or that arrogant that they think they know best, but the constant short pitched slower delivery (long hops most of them) were constantly despatched to the boundary and nothing changed. They bowled the odd yorker and they hardly got it off the square.
Pathetic....

Well, if the bowling was bad (and it was), the fielding not up to scratch (and it wasn't), the batting, so far, is, well, maintaining the same low standards; 67-4.
Hope springs eternal so tons from Morgan and Taylor would be nice and a blistering 50 from Butler.
But, let's be honest; it's quite likely we won't get within a hundred of the Aussie score. And that reflects the gulf in quality between our sides in ODIs.
