Anyone else surprised at how reasonable this thread is so far? Anyway: the simple truth that Ricardo Fuller was a sheer joy to watch for so may years meant that even the darkest of non-football matches could be transformed into a thing of wonder & beauty. Be interesting to hear Palace fans viewpoint. I'm still amazed Peace has employed him. I'm still amazed Pulis is working in Albions director of football system Got to end in tears? I'm, overall, a TP fan big time but it would be stupid to ignore the negatives. One strength (although I'm certain many would contradict me here) that is underplayed is his man management.

If the fella is a wum then fair play to him, he's certainly done a helluva lot of research on the Baggies in order to make it appear convincing.
Anyroad,
I personally never liked him, I saw at close quarters how divided the Pompey fans were when he was there and didn't want it at my club, that said it has made for (very!) many debates on here.
That he'll split the fans is one of the few irrefutable facts, most other things are, as stated above, very subjective.
If not being relegated is the only thing that matters to you, then the football is irrelevant, if you want to see some entertaining football then most weeks, particularly away from home, you'll be disappointed.
Then again, he appeared to get Palace playing something watchable, pehaps he had an epiphany?
I'd forget all about away games, either that or go for the craic and stay in the pub, you'll try and convince yourself it'll get better to justify the time and expense - it won't.
Forget about youth policy, apparently in the ten years he was here he didn't attend a single youth game at any level.
Good luck and I wish you well, mainly because my mate is a massive fan and I've always had a lot of time for Baggies fans in general, I was at wembley when you beat the Vale in the Play-off Final.

So that's at least one...
Ryan sort of proves the youth thing to be a bit of a myth. He was pretty much a Pulis regular from the age of 19. That seems to indicate putting your faith in young players if they are good enough to play at the highest level.
I can't think of too many under 20's in any club's first team.

You couldn't make this thread up could you? A baggie asking for info on their manager, a certain Mr T Pulis After all the piss taking vomit spewed our way when he was in charge here, the answer to all your questions is :- "who cares" As for dividing your fans, I don't believe that for one moment, next you'll be telling us you have words like " Rimmers" and "Wankstains" splashed all over your forum For what it's worth I enjoyed our football up to the semi final. I think his biggest mistake was he never replaced our wingers with the quality needed. Instead he tried to shoehorn every man and his fuckin' dog out on the wing and it failed miserably.

Sorry to see the Bojan news, seems a likeable guy and couldn't of happened at a worse time for him with the football he had been playing. Also seen a suggestion of Sinclair on this board. From what we saw of him last year you would be better bringing Trevor Sinclair out of retirement. One of the most disappointing signings we have made in along time, offered absolutely nothing and barely made the squad let alone starting 11 for the second half of the season. By all accounts just couldn't be bothered any more. Anyway, Pulis is already splitting a lot of us fans. Nobody really doubts that when it comes to purely keeping us up this year he was the best option available so I'm not looking for input on the results side of his management, but there's a few other things that I assume you guys will know about him more than anyone else. Is his style as bad as is made out? Honestly, without wishing to cause offence, I'm one of those you could probably label in the rather 'rather get relegated that watch that every week' camp. I have no problem with what he did with you in your first season or 2 in the PL, and if someone had done that with us when we first came up I would have felt the same. But after the novelty of being in the PL wore off did the football remain as bad to watch? Will he ever look to progress a team? Again one of the main arguments is that ideally Pulis will come in, keep us up by any means and then progress us in the summer to a better style of play. I never saw any of this at Stoke (feel free to correct me) and your results, points tally's, finishing positions, goals score etc all seems to suggest things stayed pretty much the same. How good/bad is his transfer record? When we had Dan Ashworth in charge our transfer policy was probably the main reason for our success. Since he left for the FA our record has been appalling so in this regard it can't get much worse I suppose. I think the set up now is probably similar to yours when Pulis was there, with a Director of Football in similar in place (did you guys have Rudge in that role?) but in reality Pulis calls the shots. I know every manager has good/bad signings and Pulis seems to have done much better with his lower cost buys than his big money deals. In short if Pulis came back to Stoke woudl you rather him or a DoF or similar in charge of bringing players in? Will we end up with 4 centre backs in defence? We've already seen Lescott shifted to left back last week and another CB bought in. Wisdom supposedly is a centre back although he always played right back or Liverpool and has played there all season for us for I'll let that slide for now. I seem to remember you guys crying out for proper full backs for a few years and not getting them. Pocognoli was one of our few decent summer signings and in many fans views was one of our better players before Christmas. Since Pulis came in he cant get a look in either in league or cup games with Lescott and Chris Baird preffered instead of him. Can we expect more of this? Will he sign/trust foreign players? Or at least foreign players who come from abroad, rather than someone who had already been playing in the PL for a few years. There's a view that he's come in and without even looking like players like Varela, Blanco, Gamboa, Pocognoli has decided they dont fit. You could argue he went with the previous coaching teams views on them but they left as well so I would assume everyone had a blank slate. All the players we have been linked with are either British or have played in the PL before. Is there much point in his having a foreign scouting department with Pulis here? Did Pulis 'throw' away games against certain sides? His record against the traditional top sides seemed acceptable at home, although mainly down to the points taken off Arsenal. However for a manager/side famed for making things so difficult for sides your away record from what I can see was (and again, no offence) woeful. Now most managers will naturally have a poor record away at the big 4 but his seems particularly bad with a team that normally keeps things so tight regularly shipping 3+ goals a game. Is it a case that his style simply didn't work against those sides away from home and he refused to try to adapt it, or was there a feeling amongst you guys he didn't believe his sides could win these games? Good luck for the season, from an ironic point of view it would be pretty funny to see you come to the Hawthorns, dominate possession and then us score from a set piece. It seems a decent number of our fans (although not all) now reckon they always rated Pulis and never liked Mowbrays tippy tappy stuff in the first place :-) Blimey - you have certainly done your homework - that assessment is spot on I was a big Pulis fan - in the main I liked his no nonsense attitude - you either do it his way or else F-Off. Your keeper has already noted this approach and there is no doubt he will build a squad who believe in him and he will get results - Pulis is a winner; though he did used to throw away games v the big four I was a fan but after a number of seasons the shine began to wear off - I and many others wanted more (are we ever satisfied?). Under pressure in his last season Pulis began to change his style and results were not so good Hopefully he will have learned something at Palace where he had some pace up front and it brought results with not a little style I hope that he keeps you up and then you adopt the Palace style - not the old Stoke style. Then let's see who can build the better football team for our continued rivalry. Pulis's arrival at West Brom will keep this pot boiling for years

At the end of the day Pulis for all the shitty football left us in the strongest position in 30 years.
The baggies have been yo-yoying up and down from the Prem for years. Hodgson was building them a solid base but left for England. They need a safe pair of hands so hes a great signing for West Brom at this time.
We have built further since the departure of Pulis but still with a core of players signed by him.
So his LEGACY for all it gets mocked is there for all to see. Both Stoke and Crystal Palace are stable mid-table Premier League clubs.
And I hated his football!

and isn't interested in any other aspects of his managerial ability other than the specific ones that inevitably start arguments on here? The thing is I don't need to be told that he will most likely keep us, that he can organise a defence or that he favours a club tracksuit with matching cap. If you have anything else you feel is relevant about him that I've missed out please feel free to share You will just have to get used to 'Pulisball, the cage, bonus games, clean sheets, parking the bus, managing expectations, goarrrrrrn John' for as long as it lasts. Enjoy the ride if you can.

As regards throwing games, yes Pulis does that. I remember on many occasions being nonplussed about his team selection, then realising that the window was open. As regards the Valencia game, Pulis bottled one of the biggest games in the history of our club.

I think he does look to progress, but his idea of progression is 'same thing, better players'. At the end of the day, he looks for deluxe versions of the players that fit into his standard moulds. He'll never lose the cage, he'll just try to get better defensive midfielders. He won't get rid of the Mama role, he'll just put somebody more expensive in it. Sometimes this results in the non - deluxe version (Mama, Whelan, Delap) keeping out the ill fitted deluxe version (Kitson, Whitehead, Palacios).

I have given up contributing to Pulis threads because its' almost impossible to get reasonable comment but I am going to make a couple of points on this thread whilst it's still sensible. I have supported and watched Stoke since the 1950s. The Waddington era was fantastic but the first season in the premiership under Pulis was the most exciting season I have ever experienced. The excursion into europe and the cup run was as good as it gets (Valencia away excepted ) but that was as good as it got. I am neither a wankstain or rimmer but in the end I was glad to see Pulis go and am pleased with the clubs progress under HUghes. Under TP it was always us against the big boys fighting for survival which was great for a while but now we go into matches as equals of most clubs and I love that.

Is his style as bad as is made out?
75% of the time yes, safety first all the way with Pulis, he will keep you in the league but my question was what is the point of being in the league if all you want to do is get to the "magical 40 point mark" & see games against the top teams as "Bonus Games". Pulis doesn't look up the table with optimisim he looks at the bottom 3 points tally, he will at times bore the pants off you and make team selections that you will be tearing your hair out at. But ultimatly you will continue to carry Premier League status because of it. Ultimate percentage football and have you heard of " The Cage" yet? Put it this way, don't expect attacking central midfield players.
Will he ever look to progress a team?
He will look to "Push On", meaning spending top dollar on average established Premiership players, all of which must fit a dna of workhorse, good attitude & often over 6ft. Give him a "footballer" and he doesn't seem to know how to utilise them, they end up as outcasts.
How good/bad is his transfer record?
I'd say it's 50/50, he was lucky at Stoke he had money to compensate for his mistakes and he did spend a lot, widely believed to be over £100 million. He bought some proper gash that couldn't adapt to his "style", but also bought some real good players and he has an eye for a Goalkeeper. He likes to shop in Sunderland & tottenham mostly.
Will we end up with 4 centre backs in defence?
Yes. His way of thinking is push the opposition out wide so they have to cross the ball, he likes 4 centre backs to cover the crosses. This is why he uses two holdding midfielders to push the opposistion out wide.
Will he sign/trust foreign players?
Yes, a long as they have previous Premiership experience, he won't be shopping abroad for fresh unknown talent, not a cat in hells chance.
Did Pulis 'throw' away games against certain sides?
Not as much throw away but accept defeat before a whistle was blown and do a damage limitation exercise, he often set out for a draw away from home and when we conceeded an early goal there was no plan b.

If you are not sure about the style of play under Pulis, I suggest you watch the Eveton away game from a couple of weeks ago on MNF!
West Brom had 31% possession and failed to have a single shot on target. This was against an Everton side that had won once in 7 games and had the worst defensive record at home!
There is only so long you can watch that for!

Oh and get ready for the pre-match interviews where Pulis makes the opposistion out to be Real Madrid in disguise, they will have top top players, each and everyone of them,he will never, ever, under any circumstanes big his own players up.
that was one of my pet hates with Pulis, even after he spent £100 million on his own players, the other team was always labelled by him as superior

One thing for sure is you baggie fans will save some cash on away games....you will simply stop going especially if its one of Tone's Bonus Games A couple of things not mentioned...i think... On the eve of TP's sacking he revealed he had compiled a few hundred page dossier on how to move the club forward. If he can find it again in the attic of his sandbanks mansion or maybe its being used as a door stop....you could be in for a surprise although the smart money is on the dossier being condensed into...same system better players. Don't give up on the no foreign signings though.Expect the 'lively and inventive' Dave Kemp to be off on a six month jolly...sorry scouting mission...to South America and come back with the signing of an absolute gem called Arismendi

I think nobody will argue that TP makes teams hard to beat, and that he is very good at organizing a team defensively. When he plays with two pacy wingers his teams can be very entertaining to watch (Bolton - Stoke at Wembley), But when his teams lack that it can be the most boring thing to watch that you've ever seen. I watched Everton - WBA on TV and my God how dull it was! Of course it was different when Stoke played because you're always excited when your team play, but I guess many games were just as the one mentioned for the neutrals. Despite this I will always be grateful to TP for what he did to the club I have supported since I was 10 years old (I'm now 50!).

It's the transfer window so no doubt you Baggies are ' waiting for apples to drop ', while we have a manager who gets himself into the orchard and starts shaking a few trees.
Will your football get better ? Well, after the excitement of those first few years it became awful to watch. Away games there just wasn't any point in wasting my money and at home I spent most of the game emailing, checking other scores and even browsing eBay on my phone, only showing an interest in the spectacle before me when we got a free kick 35 yards out which gave us our only shot at goal during the game.
I have every respect for TP for getting us up, keeping us up, a great cup semi and a final appearance which in turn led to our European adventure but those last 5 months were terrible and in the end I was glad to see the back of him.
Maybe he's changed but somehow I think you'll find him exactly the same as we have.
