16 years as Port Vale manager.......14 years at Stoke City.....now semi retired......How do you feel about him? Stole a living from Stoke City and had no true affinity to the club whatsoever. Shafted Dave Kevan by refusing to take temporary charge when the Quitter did his midnight flit and ended up being a complete yes man just to protect his own position with Pulis. He's a Vale man and that much was always absolutely clear. He is also, allegedly, one of the worst golfers you could ever see. Now scouting for Hull City by all accounts. Maybe he will be the next Fail manager and live long enough to have another 10 years of continual success. Johnny Rudge is illegitimate He aint got a birth certificate Johhny Rudge is illegitimate He's a Vale bastard!

Thought he did an important job in the Gudjon and Boskamp eras and his experience was invaluable in those days.
Always seems like a thoroughly decent chap.

I like him lot but like Dave Johnno wonder why he refused to take charge when Cotterill went. There might be good reasons but he never explained it.

Had he taken the job, how long before those who couldn't overlook the Vale connection would've had their knives out?
Is it fair to say he wouldn't have had a grace period?
Maybe by that time he didn't want the stresses and strains of being a football manager anymore and was putting his family first? Who knows?

Great bloke with great experience and someone who is well respected in football away from the lunatic fringe on here. He was influential in many good players we have brought here in the past and has a keen eye for spotting good talent.

I don't really see why he should have had to explain why he didn't take a job he"d shown no interest in. And whatever reason he'd have given would have been picked at and possibly twisted because of his previous Vale connections.
He was probably better off saying nowt.

Had an influence in his first few seasons with us under Gudjon, in the end he was a glorified scout who we were just wasting a £100k a year salary on

If thats the case fair enough. But why fidn't he say atthe time? Was he ever asked? Yes he was asked and he declined because he was scared to put his head above the parapit. He was more concerned with damaging his links to the Fail and Fail fans than he was with getting any grace period. We only wanted him to take temporary charge and he refused leaving Kevan with mission impossible. He stole a living from Stoke and I repeat that he had no true affection for Stoke City at all. The praise of John Rudge and Ade Akinbyi are two subjects that always prompt a response from me.

Played a huge role throughout his time at Stoke by helping to negate Scholes lack of...skills...when negotiating contracts with players, transfer arangements with clubs & so on. The idea that Coates was happy to spend £100k a year on a 'glorified scout' is absurd. & he is a very nice man.

He didn't know that we couldn't sign Owen AFTER the transfer window had closed and then add him into our 25 man squad simply by ommitting someone to leave a gap for him. Someone explained the rules to him on the golf club car park the day before the window closed. The sheer panic on his face was worth seeing. Suffice to say, he didn't get from the car park to the golf course. Nice man he maybe but I've heard him take the piss out of Stoke and its supporters whilst being an employee of the club.
