I've been thinking about going to next years event but I'll be riding down there! Looks like a truly great experience. I feel sick just watching youtube videos of the circuit.

A couple from Harriseahead used to run trips to the TT as pedestrians. Catch a bus from Hanley at 10pm Friday, come back early hours Sunday. Usually for the senior TT if memory serves me. I think the Classic TT is worth considering too. I'm lead to believe we might see Irish style road racing in the UK soon, Potteries TT anybody?

I've never been to the TT but many years ago I watched the Manx Grand Prix around the TT course, it's a fantastic experience and kudos to those guys that ride, I wouldn't do it. Those roads are bumpy in places they literally take off at 200 mph, if they come off its god help em! The only thing that stops them is usually a stone wall. We got a good vantage point off Mt Snaefell at blistering speed, Michael Dunlop whose in that youtube video, his dad Joey Dunlop was champ there many times and I think he held circuit record, of cause it cost him his life eventually as it has for many.

There's some good open roads around Delamere forest where he can practise....I'll make some enquiries.
I don't think it's worth bothering with a helmet if you're doing over 100mph is it ?

Used to race Enduro on a CRM250 MkIII...and i've got a Ducati 996 gathering dust in my mums garage at home, although I may struggle to zip me leathers up these days Love bikes, lost many good friends to them as well. Rubbers, Brian...it's a long list of pain. The TT has to be the single most dangerous sports event on the planet, these guys are real men and I take my hat off to them. I've posted this before but it's well worth another look.

I can't recall many athletes that have ever really put their lives on the line in pursuit of glory, or indeed lost their lives in doing so.

It's a documentary about the TT legends team - John McGuinness and Simon Andrews - one of the new breed of British motorcyclists. JM is already a Manx legend. I've not seen it either, so let's discuss after eh?

Simon Andrews sadly died after a crash in May this year whilst competing in the North West200 races, Northern Ireland. Each to their own with sports, but nobody should question a bike racers dedication. Last year Jorge Lorenzo crashed in Holland on Thursday, flew to Spain and had a broken collarbone plated with a titanium insert then flew back to Holland and raced on the Saturday, finishing 5th against the best in the world. Foolhardy, maybe. Dedicated, definitely!

If you're into bikes then you have to go to the TT at least once in your life - you'll love it. There are tens of thousands of bikers and EVERY single make and model of bike that you can imagine will be there. I went with half a dozen mates on bikes for the 100th anniversary in 2007 and it was immense. We stayed in Peel, mainly because we got cheap accommodation with us all in one house and The Who and The Stranglers were playing (different nights) at the Peel festival which we had tickets for. Douglas is FULL of bike displays, stunt riding, donut competition's etc, etc every night. We were in a packed pub in Douglas one night when the cops came in to complain about the volume of the Karaoke. The copper took to the stage, mumbled something about keeping the noise down, slung his helmet to his mate, grabbed the mic and started doing an Elvis song. The place went MENTAL! It's a great laugh. And of course riding the track is a big buzz. Everyone does a few laps of the hallowed tarmac. For the 100th anniversary they made the mountain section one-way (not sure if this is still the case) because everyone tear arses over the mountain anyway and there had been a few accidents with on coming cars in previous years. You're safe in the knowledge that there's nowt coming the other way so you start taking the racing line around blind corners which is a weird feeling to start with but you soon get used to it. I was doing 125 mph with lads coming past me as if I was parked up. Truly bonkers but the rush is second to none. As for it being dangerous. It is. But they do have some safety procedures. Novice racers wear orange bibs and they have to complete a certain number of laps (I think it takes a couple of years) before they ditch the bibs and race for real. Novice's first time. They send the Riding Marshall's around first to check the racing line for dampness and debris and then the racers come. There's a standing Marshall every 100 yards or so and when the racers are coming they blow a whistle. The next marshall hears the whistle and blows his so at first you hear this faint whistle sound in the distance which gets louder and louder, the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and then the racer comes into view tucked in low trying to get to the red line in 6th at every chance. Watching the racing (and practices) is what it's about. Pick a spot around the track, open a cold beer and enjoy. There are plenty of good vantage points. I watched from a few. Quarterbridge was for the first practice. A German rider came down the hill to the sharp right-hander, locked up his brakes and got spat out on the high side, all the crowd waited until he got to his feet and then burst out laughing and cheering. He took off his helmet with a massive grin and started blowing kisses to the crowd. great stuff. I watched from the entrance to the Crosby Hotel, pint in hand and about 2 yards from the curb. A minute later the racers where 2 inches from the curb doing 160 mph. Un-fucking-believable!! Cronk y Voddy is a fast rural section the Mitre Hotel has BBQ's etc just before Kirk Michael village which is fun watching them blast through a village. Ballaugh Bridge is where they really get airborne with The Raven pub nearby. Ginger Hall is a slow(er) hairpin and a great pub! Ramsey's always popular, Parliament Square and the couple of pubs either side of the course. The Mountain section is all rural, picnic blankets and packed lunches (and warm clothes!). Creg-Ny-Baa is packed but a great vantage point. Etc, etc..... it's all good We rented a car, took turns in being the designated driver and drove around the course/island in the evening doing pub crawls. Brilliant. Also, the IOM Government put a cap on the price of merchandise. About £10 for an official embroidered polo shirt and £20 for a jacket if memory serves. They also make the teams open their paddocks to the public so you can wander around and get up close to the mechanics and sometimes riders if that's your thing. Top tips: If you're going over by ferry book the steam Packet early. They get rammed. Don't forget to checkout the sidecar racing. Those boys are great especially through a twisty bit with the passenger hanging on for dear life - literally!!
