"Shooting script format!?!" You are such a lovey!!! You can see that my involvement with this has led me to absorb some of the industry language.

"Shooting script format!?!" You are such a lovey!!! Too right! He's even written to Tony Scholes to suggest that the club add a Stoke City cravat to the merchandise in the club shops. I shouldn't really confess this but when I was a student I used to wear a deerstalker hat - still got it but I'm not going to give you the chance to take the michael by giving it an outing at a Stoke game

I wonder what some of the omitted scenes were!
And the script mentions Neil hugging LMH in the dugout. I don't remember seeing that.

One of them was about what happened on a trip to an away game when I drove Neil to London and also had the real me talking to the acted me - but it got cut There were quite a few changes from the first version. Some were the result of discussion between the Director and the writer, which is why that is such an important relationship. At the end of the day, it all had to fit into 90 minutes - so if something gets added or is shown for longer than originally planned, something else had to go. Some of it was last minute.

I'm sure a certain amount of 'tightening' of the script had to happen. Such a shame your bit was edited out. I was just curious to find out what bits were missing.

Just gave it a viewing, most of the content was "before my time" so to speak though thanks to tales from the old man it didn't perhaps feel as foreign as it should. With that said i'm sure non stoke or even non football fans could watch it and enjoy it for what it is! ...a fantastic feel good bit of TV, highlighting one of the many characters in the Stoke city F.C. family. Hat's off to anyone involved, it's certainly made my night!

Makcolm, could there be a Marvellous 2 ? I rather doubt it myself. I know the writer, Pete Bowker, thinks it's a "one off" story. What is more likely is a book and preliminary discussions have already started about that.

What is more likely is a book and preliminary discussions have already started about that. I'd be rather happy with a "Marvellous May"; a BAFTA for Marvellous and an FA Cup win for the mighty Potters. That would be a unique "double". I wonder what odds I'd get for that? Guess a good writer could also spin out a Marvellous 2 from that back story!

Not to mention a split infinitive. The shame... The film itself was funny, moving and uplifting. I Lol'd and also BLAB'd (as young people might say) - and so did the current Mrs Str8. Comments I have had from fans of countless other teams suggest that it helps to be a Stokie, but that the story was a much wider one, and (at the risk of being precious) shed a little bit of light on the human condition. Marvellous has "award" written all over it.

Finally got around to watching this tonight. What a fantastic life story. Absolutely inspiring. Are all the little stories in it true - Malcolm Clarke ? I know most of the main themes are based on actual events but what about things like the "boxer shorts" incident, and the team talk scene? Did Lineker turn up at Keele to help him put his team together and did Uriah Rennie ref a match for him? Fascinating stuff.

On the last question I think it is a "yes" to Rennie and a "No" to Lineker actually turning up at Keele, although it is quite possible Neil did appoint him "President"? The thought occurs to me this is the 2nd time Lineker has been involved with a Stoke City related production. Who saw the Play (written by Arthur Smith) "An Evening With Gary Lineker" from 1991 which was about a Stoke City supporter I recall? It was very funny in truth and also had plenty of Jimmy Greenhoff references too. Only thing that was strange for me about the Lineker appearance in Marvellous is that it did not look like anyone in the costume department had asked him to dress up in the gear of the day, it looked to me like he had just fallen straight out of the MOTD studio and on to the set

In reality I think Keegan was the president? I am sure Malcom can clarify. Great programme, only recently watched as was overseas, I too am wondering about most of the anecdotes, the boxer shorts is true (Tranmere away/Martin Carruthers).
Malcolm, was there ever anything in the shooting script about Nello turning up to a away match Hotel and masquerading as Lord Keele? I read that in Lous autobiography

One of our H&S advisors was in the office today in Warrington, he lives in Sheffield not into football, I heard him asking one of the admin ladies if she'd seen Marvellous yet, he then said, 'I've seen it 7 times already, one of the best things I've ever seen' Is that getting to be obsessive ?
