I massively disagree that they're a product of their time only, I'm 25 and have been an avid fan for at least a decade if not longer, but I wasn't even born in their heyday so to say they're context dependent is spurious. Also The Smiths and Joy Division? What? I've never ever heard the two bands compared at all. I think it's very difficult to argue that any band is not contextually linked to a time and a place. And quite often that is what is really interesting about certain artists. Part of the Smiths appeal, very much in the same way as Culture Club, was the fact that they were not only challenging the notion of what music was about but also the UK's ideas of gender, sexuality, stereotypes and prejudice about a whole raft of things in 1982. This was a huge part of their appeal at the time - hence the Smiths having their cultural identity forever linked to that early eighties period. Morrissey cut quite a controversial figure back then, he was a champion for the repressed, lonely and misunderstood and it seemed that some people clung to them for dear life. I'm glad that they are still finding a new audience to this day, I was a big fan, I just find them personally too hard to listen to these days. It's me that's changed.

I have all the music from both of them (its not hard with the number of albums they did). I recognise its a touchy subject with The Smiths especially being the band many here grew up with, but they hit the same nerves and ticked the same boxes for many who listened to them. All you need to do is google them together to see the sheer number of comparisons made even now. I've been a proper indie saddo for well over thirty years, and I promise that's the very first time I've ever heard anyone suggest that Joy Division and the Smiths have anything in common at all. Both bands had a member called Stephen.

Both bands had a member called Stephen. Well you would say that Yes, he would wouldn't he? I've also allowed owd Brassneck to think that he's been basking in relative anonymity for months now. Still, at our age, I suppose you have to take on board as on as much petty amusement as you possibly can....daft bugger. I knew he was on here somewhere, it was just a matter of time before I sniffed him out. He probably would have had me none the wiser if he hadn't made the fatal error of mentioning the Speed Puppies a way back. That narrowed the net considerably as their popularity was, shall we say, selective?

most over rated band in history, even more than oasis, some good tracks but the god like status they enjoy is wasted. Sums it up perfectly Salop!

Neil Morrisey was bought up in a Childrens Home round here. .though he never mentions that much now.
Steven Morrisey is becoming a proper bell-end. He has aways believed in his own publicity though.
Still love The Smiths..wonderful lyrical jangly pop. Especially their later stuff. 'London' was one of their finest tracks. Done as part of a Peel Session.

Hang on a second me 'owd dribbler, I don't think that you're 100% correct there. He does talk about it - he used to be on our schools friends re-united board loads too. I went to school with Mozzer and he was always a sound lad, was really well liked at school too. I also had quite a few mates from "Penkhull Homes" as well, again all sound. Neil even made a documentary about St. Christopher's and his Thistley Hough schooldays that went out on the BBC. As far as influential figures go, he always quotes the brilliant Drama and English teacher, Mrs. Steele as being his guiding light. She was omebody who believed in him and encouraged him. I can remember her very well too - she was a very special lady. I'd say it's a bit harsh to say he's ignoring his past. I may well be wrong, but why do think that is the case?

Saw Mozzer in the Italian Gardens..Trentham filming a few years ago & spoke to him..maybe it was a bad day..he seemed a bit dismissive of Stoke...maybe it was me..I don't know but I know he lived at Penkhull Homes..St Christophers Avenue cuz I lived up the road.
Good luck to him.
Always seemed a decent bloke on TV

C'mon **************, you might as well just admit it. Yes, OK Cheez - that's quite brilliant. But quite a lot of their catalogue really does jangle my nerves these days. I was always fond of this though...

Without an absolute doubt morrissey will be the best lyracist that has ever lived in any generation, and together with marr they were unbelievable. If they reformed now I would bet my life it would be the quickest selling gig ever ! Love him or hate him morrissey was an absolute genius . The naive folk that slag him have only ever heard the usual run of the mills tunes which (I understand) may sound morbid or down but all I can say is ;

Listen....they are never played on Smooth radio or Radio 2 so I am unanimous in saying they're shit and depressing.
And at the risk of repeating myself ....I am unanimous.

Loved them as as young man. Hate them now. What a waste of time. "Punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate". Just listen to this rubbish. Do me a favour. I'm up for an argument with someone. That's funny, I'm the opposite to **************. Didn't like them as a yout, now think they're great. I was a massive Jam fan as a kid & Jonny Marr, good as he is wasn't going to replace the caustic venom of Weller. That said I never listen to any of Wellers stuff anymore...

I've been into The Smiths since I was about 13. I'm 42 now. For me, no other band has come close. Musically and lyrically outstanding. A huge catalogue of superb tracks, the odd shitter thrown in for good measure (Golden Lights a good example) but even then, it pains me to say that any of it is shit.
I dug out 'Rank' the weekend just gone. Fucking immense.
I do fully appreciate people just won't get them though. Each to their own.
