Great event ๐ Didnt know about that one, the Northwich festival of running was also on, they did the 10k after the 5k so you could enter both, as well as the 2k fun run. About 300 runners and sold out, so still fairly small. Potential to become a fairly big one though.

I've just been to reception at the Civic Centre in Stoke held by the Lady Mayoress for the Potter's Arf. Sat in the Council Chamber and then retired to the lounge and the Mayor's parlour with tea, coffee and biscuits. Very nice it was too

Did the new Alderley Park trail race on Wednesday and won a ruddy prize for 1st V35! I wasn't actually 1st V35 (I was 4th) but the other 3 finished 1st,2nd and 3rd. And also 2 of them were Steve Vernon and Andrew Davies who are GB internationals. I'll beat them next time ๐

Couple of miles off the tracks in Wimbledon common today.
Pros: Ace views and bits of woodland, no people.
Cons: Thorns, spikes, tough on the old ankles!

Fourth run back in just over a week now with no knee issues at present, fingers crossed.

Pie and peas 5 miler tomorrow evening, no speed work done because of 6 weeks out with injury, those pies will have to wait about 5 minutes longer. Also got a young lady giving me a lift so I can wash them down with a couple of beers after.

My first post on this thread.
Anyway, used to be a decent runner (I think), 38.21 is my PB for 10km. Ive run a marathon but never a half (well that's a lie, got to anchor road in a previous potters arf but dropped out as went off to hard).
I went to watch this years potters arf and got the bug. Been out and done 6 mile today.
My questions:
- do u think that I could break 1:20 if I trai ed right - anyone have any training suggestions? Anyone up for going out??
Cheers Dave

Cheers Dave 1.20 is hard to break and you'd need to be in better shape than a 38.21 10k. If you were around 36 for 10k then you might be there or there abouts. That's not to say you couldn't do it though. Depends on your age/genes/commitment. Probably need to consistently be doing at least 35 miles a week with some speed work and a weekly long run of at least 12 miles. I always like a progression run when training for a half marathon to work on speed maintenance on tired legs. Others might disagree with me on this though. One of my colleagues who used to be a very good runner reckons you need to do similar long runs for the half as for a marathon, topping out at around 18 miles. I'll never find out if that works though as regular runs of that distance ruin me.

Sub 1:20 seems to be the domain of the fairly elite local runners I would have thought if you were a young enough age a 38:21 would get you down to 1:23/1:24 depending on your your running strengths. I'm a 5K to 10K runner in ability and the further the distance the performance tails off percentage wise. You need a club to provide encouragement, discipline, structure and advice unless you're absolutely focused then of course there's Lonely Goat

To give you an idea of how a 10k translates to a half marathon for me, in the same year I did a 36:50 10k I also did a 1:22:39 half. A mate who is a much better runner than me, who you'd have thought would go under 1:20 easily, took 3 or 4 goes before he did it when he was running under 36 for 10k consistently. You need to make sure you tailor your training to it. Miles Miles Miles.

The Cheshire half at Capesthorne Hall is a good course to acieve that PB, almost flat, it's 1st September which is too close for you this year, maybe train for it in 12 months time.

When I looked at his other records I was ahead at 5 miles, close at 10K but nowhere near his 10 mile (62 minutes) or half marathon time of 1:23. I think his marathon time for Vet 60 was under 3 hours.
