5 years ago today joined Strava and on my newly acquired road bike did 11 miles in 48 minutes. I was over 18 stone and felonious can confirm I was heart attack waiting to happen. I was 40 In that time I’ve done bits and pieces of running got down to a 48 min 10km run but 32000 miles on the bike including mountains in France, forty over 100 mile rides, and a 200 mile ride. Strava has been great for motivating myself as this thread and the people on it I’ve lost 5 stone, mental health is better, got the family more active We can all do anything if you put your mind to it Nice work 👏

Do any of you find drastic differences in performance with temperature?
Was out today at lunch time in torrential rain. 4.50km overall and 5k in 24:24.
Was like the proverbial drowned rat when I got in but it felt so much easier than lately.

It's certainly much harder to get faster times in warm weather.

You feel your body getting warmer so your first instinct is to slow down even though you're still capable of keeping the same speeds. Last week I did a 10k tempo, even at 6:30 am it was warm and muggy, definitely had an impact.

I used to drink a lot of nights when I was young, as I got older it was just weekends then when I took exercise up it was relegated to mainly football or nights out etc. I would have a bottle of wine or two on a Friday but then I took the attitude of “I’m going out on my bike tomorrow I want to be better so won’t drink”. Then that aided in losing weight and getting fitter so it was a better circle I was maki b Dont get me wrong nothing wrong with drinking I still enjoy a drink but the desire to get fitter and improve made me just cut down. It wasn’t even a conscious decision, the bike just came first

I'll have 2 or 3 strong beers / stouts and leave it at that, but only if I'm not at the gym or running the next day. Probably once or twice a week nowadays. Still have the odd all-dayer every few weeks but that's about it.

Thought I'd try some of this interval training today. I ran a mile to the park and then found about a 400m stretch and basically quickly ran 300m then walked the remaining 100m while I got my breath back, then turned around and did the same on the return journey. I did this 6 times (so 12 x 400m in total) I then ran a couple of miles to get home. All I can say is that I was absolutely fucked. I haven't felt so knackered since the 2 hours I spent with the girl who worked at the ice cream parlour near the corkscrew at Alton Towers. She was defo a 99/100 kinda gal... Will that do any good or barking up the wrong tree as usual? Edit: Don't take the piss but I think I was running too fast for the 300m (more like sprinting really) and then spending too long on the recovery.

The track sessions run by Newcastle Tri Club at Northwood has a 400 metre effort which is followed by a 90 second recovery. If it's 400 metre efforts only then there are 15 of them with a decent warm up and warm down. The expectation is that you set a pace whereby all laps are at the same pace ie. the maximum consistent speed you can get away with.

This is worth a read, www.penninetrails.com/don-t-follow-the-crowd-ditch-the-track-and-develop-your-own-running-philosophyDon't 'run' before you can walk basically. I'm guilty of over training sometimes, and whilst I feel like I'm improving I have to remind myself I've only been running outside since March, I'm physically fit from years of gym based cardio but proper 'running' is a different ball game. If I'm to describe it, it's not so soft as to what I'm used to. Have to say I'm loving it though. Been watching lots of fell running documentaries on YouTube, as much for the scenery as anything. If anyone is interested there's a great one about Dark Peak club, look up anything on the Bob Graham Round and Paul Tierney running all 244 Wainwrights in 6 days, 6 hours and 5 minutes! There's a vet from Ambleside attempting to beat the wainwright run at the moment, not sure if she's on target but she's doing it with minimal support due to Covid restrictions. Some effort.

Nice article but if I can just add that the 40-50 miles per week mentioned is at the upper end of mileage for most runners. I would usually only get near that when training for a tough half or a 20 mile race/ marathon. Over the years I've generally run three times a week doing 25/30 miles. The best younger local runners seem to be doing far more mileage, 60/80 miles per week at slower speeds, 8 minute miling. I was talking to one local runner last December before he did the Lanzarote marathon in 2:38, he did Berlin last year in 2:30 and most of his weekly mileage is slow miles. The local lad who wins the league regularly is doing the same so don't think every run has got to be a blast It pays I think to vary the weekly runs as much as possible.

What about drinking lucozade before running? Anyone try that? I’m running about 8.30/45 for my first few miles and then tail off to about 10 minutes at the end. I’m knackered. Might the lucozade help? I remember it helping me a bit when I used to play football.

If I'm running at 6:30 in the evening I need something around 3:00/ 3:30 ish. The other thing is if you're concentrating on 10Ks and struggling towards the end it might be worth chucking the odd slower 7/8 miler in every week just to make sure you got the stamina to last a 10K at pace. You don't need Lucozade

Well I made the trip up to Rosebank Sports in Northwich today and got sorted with a new pair of running shoes and a new pair of trails. They were giving Northy a right slagging off, didn't let on that I knew him The buggers were proper happy with the footy one being a West Ham fan, the fourth goal went in as I was chatting to him and the other being an Alex fan
