Try your local library. Audiobooks are around a £1 each to loan. I spend a lot of time on the train and a good audiobook is a brilliant way to relax. Have to say I have used librivox but I find computerised voices (or some of the dreary yanks they also use) very difficult to listen to. For a long train journey...I find a kindle , or a normal book adequate ......audio books are not really books in to my mind ...but each to there own thing ..

Fair enough. I get travel sick really easy, so being able to lean back, relax and let someone else read the book means I am still in good nick when I get there. The Kindle is fine when having my tea in the local Weatherspoons or in the hotel. A "real" book is ideal in my armchair. Each of them have their advantages and place (and to be fair the OP was asking questons about audiobooks)

I down load straight to my phone or ipod (haven't used the ipod yet but for ease would) so would down load to them.

What ii is bisp in March at my annual check up i was amazed to find i had piled on the weight and was 19 stone, after i got over the shock as the heaviest i have ever been was 17 stone i needed to get the weight off so i got a spinning cycle and started power walking twice a day so my best friend was my i pod, well nearly 3 months on and using the ipod for nearly 2 hours every day the music is getting repetitive and boring,so i had an email about audible books and gave it a go and really enjoy listening while working out so a kindle (which i would love) or a book are just not doable in this instance mate. PS last weight check 15 stone.

I enjoy the walking and the 20 minute session on the bike but without the music and now books it would be hard to sustain and at the minute it's become easy that's why i want to get more entertainment while i do it so it becomes the norm. I was gonna buy the Kindle hd last year but in all fairness it will only end up in the lads possession so I'll wait a bit.

Trying to get through the dan brown book at the moment , very much like his other books . Dull and predictable . Keep saying I won't buy any more of his Not read any Dan Brown books as yet... mixed reviews, not long back I read the Tom Rob Smith trilogy... the 1st being "Child 44" top draw read in my opinion, then read the other two, "Secret Speech" and "Agent 6", super entertainment... well worth getting into.

Looking forward to it.

With using my ipod and phone a lot for music its getting a bit boring so have looked into the audible books. Amazon do a monthly subscription thats 8 pound a month with a book credit but being a lord of the rings fan i was gonna use my next credit for that but they have split it into 8 books, and don't fancy paying for all of them. Is there any sites that you can get them for free? PS got Inferno by Dan Brown and has been excellent thus far. Haven't tried it mesen but I came across this website when I was looking for free kindle books. Free audio books

I joined Audible six months ago, and have been able to listen to many books that due to my dyslexia were previously beyond my reading ability to enjoy. I feel like I'm finally joining a club that had up until now, had barred my entry. Audio books do not have the cachet of a real book, but let's not get too snobby about them as there are plenty of seemingly lazy or illiterate people out there that audio books provide a window on the literary world.

They (Audiobooks) are definitely a different proposition. The trick is to find a book which translates well into the audio book format plus the reader should also be able to add something extra and bring the story to life. When you do find a good one, you'll really see what the fuss is about. And if you're listening whilst walking for fitness, the whole process can be very pleasurable, surprisingly i'd say.
As I was walking a couple of hours each day I tended to go for light hearted stuff, and I can recommend three that I really enjoyed, one of them was absolutely brilliant.
In reverse order...
3. Life by Keith Richards, surprisingly detailed memoirs by the Rolling Stones legendary guitarist.
2. A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. Read by the author. Definitely got me chuckling and thinking in a big way.
1. Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bordain. Hilarious memoirs of the celebrated underground American Chef. Bourdain reads and brilliantly entertains the listener with candid insider facts, hilarious anecdotes and his unique take on all things. If you only ever listen to one audibook, this is the one.

Not long finished the last in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, loved them all. I really enjoyed them too. I read The Killing Floor, (the first Jack Reacher book) next, and whilst it's very lightweight, it was a good listen and very well read. My favourite audio book to date has been The Secret Race, about Tour de France rider, Tyler Hamilton. You don't have to be knowledgeable about cycle racing to enjoy it. There's a charitable collection of audio books currently on Humble Bundle, I got them for $6, it looks a bit of a bargain and the money goes to a good cause. Humble Bundle

Done a lot of reading of late (shite weather!) I was looking forward to some what I thought would be a "good read"... Read "the twelve" the Justin Cronin follow up! good story... Poor ending (in my opinion)... Finished a C.J.Sansom book called "Dominion" ... So looking forward to this book... What a let down! Crap story, crap characters, it was so P.C. Pure shit!... So disappointed in this write. If you're reading this Bisp, try a book called "The Instance Of The Fingerpost" by Iain Pears.... Historical fiction... Superb! In my option. Some good Scandi Crime out there too.

I always thought that they were good for those poor souls who struggles to read, couldn't read or were just a tad lazy I think they can make some works a tad more accessible. I've tried a couple of times to read Dante's Devine Comedy, but found the going a bit too tough. However, listening to it on an audio book helped me to complete and appreciate it for the masterpiece that it is.

Since my last post, I've done all the Jack Raeacherr books and I'm most of the way through the John Milton thrillers which are very well narrated.

There are lots to go at on YouTube if you do a search, quite battery draining but there are apps to help that let you blackout your screen and save power. I work in a factory and wear ear protection so spend most of my day listening to audiobooks and podcasts

I don't think it would be possible to rip them but not 100% sure. YouTube have become very precious about how to view/listen to things. I used to have an app called Background tube which let me minimize the YouTube window and either turn off my phone or use another app whilst listening but that has been stopped now. As i said on a previous post i now have an app called Black Me that lets me blackout the screen but not turn it off.

Currently listening to "Sailing Alone Around The World, by Joshua Slocum". Apparently, Slocum was the first man to sail solo around the world back in 1895. It's not Audible books, but the recording and narration are quite good for a free audio book. I've been listening to it during my daily walks. Link below to those interested. I really got into audiobooks during lockdown to accompany me on my morning and lunchtime walks.
I’d recommend any of Dominic Sandbrook’s modern history series. I’m currently listening to his latest, Who Dares Wins covering the first three years of Thatcher’s premiership. It’s full of interesting stuff and a good reminder of what a mess she (well Geoffrey Howe mostly) made of the economy during that time as well as the lunacy Labour descended into. Plenty of popular culture stuff too.
