She was voted fan of the year a few years back. She's 92 or 93 rarely misses a game home or away and she started going in the 1940s. She usually goes with one of her daughters who is herself of pensionable age. You've probably seen them - they have scarves full of Stoke badges. She used to act as a courier on the official coaches and they sold draw tickets before the game for many years.
At Southampton last month she got knocked over by two of our more exuberant and moronic fans and ended up in hospital.
Lovely lovely lady.

A real shame and hope she can get better very quickly. I hope also, that this is in no way connected to her nasty fall and injuries at the Southampton game. When you take knocks like that at her age, as fit as she was, it can really knock you so I hope beyond hope, that this stroke isn't connected in any way to the shock of that particular incident. Get well soon Mabel. Like many, I don't know her personally but have seen her all over the country watching Stoke and also all over Europe now as well!

Unfortunately it is linked to the fall at Southampton She takes warfrin to thin the blood and they were worried about the knock causing a bleed on the brain so they had to stop the wafrin. Stopping the wafrin has left her susceptible to blood clots and she had one removed from her arm last week. Unfortunately a second has formed and found it's way to her brain causing the stroke

Give her a big hug from all of us and tell her that there will be a lot of Stokies keeping their fingers crossed.

Thanks for the info, sad though it is. Now I know why I've been unable to contact her, this past two days.
Very good photo's of Mabel, with Margaret and Shirley, respectively, her oldest and youngest offspring. The first 48hrs are crucial re strokes, so am pleased that she is speaking, however feebly and seems to be holding her own.
We're all with her in spirit and hoping that she is cheering on the lads around the time of her 94th birthday, in September.

Sounds quite serious this in terms of injury and age. It may well be the end of Mabel's visits to football. Theres a very fine line here between exhuberance and some kind of ABH related issue

I think some effort should be put into finding those who hurt her, by accounts located on here they showed her no care or attention after the incident. they should at least explain themselves, and apologise to the family.

It was bad enough that she was ill but the thought that this could actually have been triggered by the actions of some daft and according to reports, totally uncaring Stoke City supporters is sad beyond belief. Fingers crossed she can make a full recovery and make it quickly. May those who harmed her hang their heads in shame or should they be seen at a Stoke match next season, get what's coming to them. As a side note, surely this is a prime example as to why SAFE STANDING should be very high up on the agenda of those involved with football administration. The sooner safe standing is introduced, the safer a football stadium will be for those who actually WANT to sit or stand at football.

Or just enforce people sitting down like they should be Dave, it should have been easy to do under last two years of pulis anyway ;-)

Or just enforce people sitting down like they should be Dave, it should have been easy to do under last two years of pulis anyway ;-) I agree with davejohnno. Very unusually, I wasn't at that game because I was part of a delegation visiting a Borussia Dortmund game to experience their safe standing areas which have a rail along every row, making forward surges impossible. That is the model Aston Villa and others want to pilot in this country. I obviously didn't see the incident, but I was told that the surge which knocked Mabel over was down the gangway. If that is so, irrespective of whether people are standing, the stewards should have kept the gangway clear. I was also told that Mabel herself was standing in the front row because her view was blocked by photographers. Again, if that is true, it shouldn't have happened. In any case, even where persistent standing is clamped down upon, it has always been accepted that people will stand at moments of excitement, such as when a goal is scored. I understand that the incident occurred when we scored.
