A couple criticisms right off the bat: while watching ESPN Brasil's pre-game (the only ones that are consistently critical of what is going on), the reporter interviewed a few people.

At first it was one of the most amazing characters I've ever seen, an old black guy, probably around 80 years old, a samba composer. Hours away. Another one couldn't get his ticket all the same, even though he isn't elderly.

Then the reporter went on to a couple. A woman wearing a Fluminense jersey. He talked about the Libertadores elimination. She was sad and all that, then the reporter asked about the game and asked how much she had paid. R$ 300. Half a minimum wage, and I'm not sure it was only for her or for both of the couple. [Half of what she'd earned for that month, earned at minimum wage.]

The next person was this black guy with a brand new Brazil shirt and his blonde female friends. The reporter asked him something and he replied "I'm excited!" in English. The reporter realized he wasn't Brazilian and asked where he was from. Boston, Massachusetts he said. All of the other friends were Americans too.

As the camera panned away more and more people were coming in. Middle class, upper class, brand new jerseys, smartphones, cameras. I did not see a single black person. Brazil is a multicultural place, the Southeast especially, but if you don't see anyone dark-skinned among 60 thousand people in Rio de Janeiro something is very wrong.

That is the new Maracanã, courtesy of FIFA, CBF and the gentrification of football. If you're a football fan from a favela, you don't get inside. Regardless how many times you went there before and how many songs you wrote about it, at most you stand outside singing them to the wind.

A World Cup in Brazil without everything that makes Brazil, Brazil. No fake shirts blowing in the wind outside the stadium, no one selling popcorn, no one shouting and enjoying it, no one taking their club passion to the stadium. What we have are Americans, upper class people that have 300 reais to blow on a ticket and a lot of faked excitement.

What a great World Cup in Brazil.

I absolutely hate football sometimes. I couldn't live without it and neither could most on here. We're set up to be taken advantage of because of that though. The powers in the game need to be changed and rules put in place to make the game better for everybody.
