It was in stans testimonial game in 1965 mate. Yes, Oldpotter is correct. There is a well known photograph (which the Sentinel reproduced in on of the the 150th commemoration editions) showing Puskas and Yashin carrying Sir Stan off the pitch at the end of the game.

Attachment DeletedJust had a look at the programme from Sir Stans testimonial. For the younger ones, please see the scan of the team page. Back to the older ones, can you remember singing this song in the Boothen, with a little poetic licence re the rhyming with Yashin? " ei ei ei ei, Farmer is better than Yashin, Dobing is better that Eusebio and ( whatever team we were playing) are in for a thrashing"

Matthews, Charlton, Yashin, Puskas, Di Stefano, Gento, Kopa... all on the same pitch. Did anyone on here see this match?
EDIT: Forgot Eusebio as well.

Just got goose bumps looking at the programme. That must have been pretty special. I doubt there has ever been a better group of players on one pitch at the same time.

John Charles who played for the World side in Sir Stan's testimonial was someone who a lot of todays fans may not have heard of. That was the last time I saw him play and he remains one of the few players who was world class as both a striker and a defender. He was a superb centre forward and an equally superb centre half (centre back in today's jargon). He would sometimes play in both positions in a single game for both club (mostly Leeds and Juventus) and Country (Wales). Certainly one of the best players I ever saw in the flesh. Born in Swansea - what would they give to have him playing for them today?
I got to speak to him about ten years back when he held a book signing at the football museum at Preston before we played them. Lovely man - he died a year or so later. I'm pleased to say that when I mentioned I had seen him play in Sir Stan's testimonial, a big grin came over his face and he said it was a night he really enjoyed.

'Twas a night that will long live in the memory of those who were fortunate to see the game. So many greats including Yashin. But he was in good company that night.

Fully agree he was a superb player, I was at the match and it was fantastic. Some classic heroes in both teams, shows how highly regarded Stan was. Pity some of the young ones think of us as "little old Stoke". I wish they had seen us in our heyday and hope we can return to it.

spiderpuss! Close! But it was 'Ay ay ay ay, Banks is better than Yashin, and Dobing is better than Eusebio……..' etc. etc., as others have posted it here, and we used to sing it all the time, not just at that game.
It was taken from the chorus of a Mexican song, 'Canta y no llores' so the 'ay' was pronounced 'eye'. Anyone wanting to check out the original song can find it on YouTube, sung by Semino Rossi, on this link:
Our version was brilliant, as were so many of our 1960s/70s songs, and I've often wished we could revive this one and many of the others.
And yep, I was at the game in question.
'Appy days!

I was there and what a line up of talent. Jim Baxter alone was worth the admission price.

Yes, indeed. We used to do it right. And we had respect. Which is why Tony Pulis was so very, very hard to take. Thank goodness he's gone.

I was there in the ill-fated, soon to be windswept away, Butler Street Stand. My memory may be playing tricks with me but I do recall that Puskas hit a left foot volley against the Boothen End goal post (the left hand one looking from the Stoke End) and snapped it off! Or am I dreaming? Help!
