Not read either of them.... I was reading massimo manfredi roman novels (I'm a Greco-Roman classical history geek) before I found Scarrow! Iggulddon seems to be too wide ranging in his writing rather than a true scholar! Perhaps I'm wrong and should bite the bullet? I've read all of Manfredi's novels , the Alexander trilogy was outstanding ...although I think in recent years he has gone off the boil a little . Iggulden's Emperor series was outstanding in my opinion , the final instalment is due to be published in May ( finally !) , I do feel he stretched out the Genghis Khan series a little too far .....five books was at least one too many possibly two....as for him being a scholar I think you would have to concede that he is , the quality of his writing suggests this

Have you read any of the Empire series by Anthony Riches ? If not I reccomend them .....similar to Igguldden Very similar tastes to me mate. Harry Sidebottom does some excellent stuff and I love anything by Bernard Cornwell, even though he tends to concentrate on Ancient Britain to Azincourt. In fact, I love this genre so much I decided to start an OU course in Classical History! I highly reccommend and you get to meet/ chat to some very intelligent and intresting people. Back to the original question- reading 'The man who broke into Aushwitz'. Harrowing and simply told without the flowry language that would be used today. Sidebottom is good , his new one is out shortly , you can tell he is an academic though, thoroughly good and factual writing , but tends to lack the touch of a good story teller. Bernard Cornwell is supreme , of late he has been concentrating on those periods you mention .......he promises more Sharpe stories at some point which would be good. Both his and Conn Iggulddens web sites are interesting to look at

Only a couple of chapters in, but started off well. Comparison of the Maddie McCann and Shannon Matthews cases and the different reactions of the media/public/politicians based on their families' class backgrounds. Pretty interesting

Black Hearts by Jim Frederick. A disturbing true account of the war in Iraq.
Open: Autobiography by Andre Agassi. Excellent. Not what you'd expect.
Raising the Dead by Phillip Finch. Cave diving and dead bodies. True.

Simon Scarrow.... Loved his Macro and Cato series!!! Probably my favourite series of books are the 'Revolution' titles. Chronicle Wellington and Napoleon's rise, the fiction is so well thought out it tends to blur. Could not put them down.
