Excellent tribute to a real character and a mean defender. They sure don't make them like him any more.

Today's players don't realise how lucky they are being a le to practically retire at 35 if they are smart.
A great read dave

To be honest, I´m not sure he was that nice as a person; however, he certainly was helpful in getting us back to England´s highest league in 1979.

A great read.
Mike Doyle was magnificent for Stoke as indeed was Dave Watson too.

Doyle was ace for us. But for all that the thing I remember most is how much he hated Man Utd!!

Good read that. Brendan O'callaghan dropped back to defence! Imagine if TP did the same with SJW, he would be strung up. But he does have to find a place for him in the starting line up. Loved this guy, hard as they come. Never shirked a challenge, or more memorably, never let any one take the piss. If he got clobbered, you just knew it was only a matter of time before he exacted revenge. Brilliant!! Did'nt realise he passed away last year though, very sad. A belated RIP Micky Doyle, cheers for the memories.

I met him a few times and the most prominent thing was how much he hated Man Utd!! Once we were 0-3 down to them and Doyle decided to just hack out at anyone Man Yoo player that dared come anywhere near him. He had a go at Ron Atkinson at the end as well!

Excellent article. Congratulations to the author for this. Mike was a fine, tough player, probably the closest we've ever come to Denis Smith Number Two!

A very, very good player who gave everything every time he stepped out onto the pitch. How interesting that Waddo tried to bring him in as a youngster and then again a few years later. I wonder what difference he would have made to us? I guess Mickey Bernard wouldn't have got much of a look in.

Good memories of both Mick Doyle and Dave Watson, two players who seem to get forgotten when we talk of our best players, probably because their main career was with other clubs. They were both excellent for Stoke, quality defenders who were as hard as nails but both could pass the ball out of defence and Watson was just about the best header of a ball I have seen

Great player for us. Can remember one of his goals being a cracker. Think it was a night match and Stoke had a corner in front of the Boothen. Doyle was back on the halfway line with one of their players as the corner was about to be taken. He then started to run towards the penalty area, the corner was taken, an outswinger from the right which sailed past everone to be met in the air just outside the area by a flying Doyle. Without breaking stride, smack on the middle of his forehead, the ball just exploded off his head right into the very top right hand corner of the net, the keeper never moved, it was past him in a flash, fantastic goal.
