What are the main challenges facing the new government? You mean apart from a total lack of political nous and knowledge of the real world? The central problem is the lack of true radicalism. When this country was great, we didn't have the welfare state, a National Health Service or free education. What we did have was an empire, no income tax and a fucking big navy. You don't need a PhD to work it out, do you?

I knew a couple of lads who never set foot in the Vic. again after they sold Ritchie and they had been regular home and away fans. I myself have never felt so disappointed at the sale of a player. If something similar happened today this board would be in meltdown.

John passed away on 23 February (my birthday - as did Sir Stan); it saddens me that each year I celebrate my birthday I think of the two of them - I had the great pleasure of watching them both in those wonderful, heady but traumatic days.
