Hi,
I'm a Stoke fan who is at the University of Sheffield and I am doing my dissertation on the civil liberties of football fans.
I'd really appreciate anyone who watches Stoke away to leave a message describing any positive or negative experiences they have had with the police at football matches over the last couple of seasons.
Any comments about the level of surveillance would also be really helpful. For example, whether people think it is justified etc...
Many thanks, Lauren

Lauren, for a Stoke fan you have been remarkably quiet on this message board. Do you mind answering a question for me:
Name Stoke's current manager plus the previous three managers including the one who held the job temporarily for only a few weeks?

Hello Lauren. I'm Richard, 19, also at uni (Loughborough), got a boyfriend? Erm....;D A few things: - Derby away last season was spoilt by the kick-off being brought forward and everyone being made to travel to the game on official coaches. The way our coaches were escorted from Stoke all the way to Derby was ridiculously over the top and made me feel like a convict. Fair enough, if no restrictions were placed upon us there would have been some trouble but I didn't see the need for all Stokies with a match ticket having to travel to the game in this way.
- At Burnley last season there was some trouble involving Stoke hooligans sitting together on one side of the away stand. When they ran forward to try and get at the Burnley fans the police drew their truncheons and began hitting the Stoke fans in order to push them back. The Stoke fans began retreating but it was difficult for them all to do this at the same time due to numbers. I am sure that the police could see this but carried on hitting the hooligans (quite hard from what I remember) with their truncheons regardless. I know our 'fans' shouldn't have been acting like that in the first place but the police showed that they are incapable of sensibly controlling such a situation and carried on hitting the hooligans nevertheless.
- At Portsmouth last season we were kept in the ground for a good 15-20 minutes at the end of the game for no good reason.
- At Wolves all those that travelled to the game on official coaches had to walk to 5-10 minutes from the car park to the ground under a heavy police escort that made us feel like hooligans even though the ID cards were now in operation.
- At West Brom this season there were a number of problems involving the police. These included a security gate being shut meaning fans had to take a massive detour through a housing estate instead of walking a few yards into the away end. Fans were also ejected for standing up (I think) and for other minor offences such as swearing.
- At Wigan a fan was asked to produce his ID card in a pub. We were told ID cards would not be used for this purpose and this is a case of the police going beyond their powers.
- We were again made by the police to travel on official coaches to Cardiff this season. This was completely unneccessary and undermines the work done by both Cardiff and Stoke in introducing their respective ID card schemes.
- On the way to the Burnley game this season fans were made to wait on official coaches for nearly half an hour just outside town before the police arrived to give us an escort.
- Stoke fans have been subjected to intense surveillance at many grounds in the last couple of years, including Coventry where we were 'stared out' by a row of police at the front of the stand for all 90 minutes of the match. We are also often filmed by a police camera during long periods of a match at many grounds for no reason.
- All in all, although some police measures are justified, most are over the top and uncalled for, especially now we have the ID scheme.
