'City of God' is a great film but was well recognised worldwide similar to 'Y tu Mama Tambien' shortly afterwards. Certainly did get credit and rightly so.
As far as Brazilian films go the pretty brutal 'Pixote' is well worth a look if you likes 'City of God'- set in Sao Paolo and was on C4 many years ago.
Good shout though.
One of my favourite ever films was 'Christiane F'- set in Berlin , pretty grim subject matter but a great great film.
The likes of 'Die Hard' were big box office hits so certainly were well recognised- have to admit have never seen any of them.
'Love honour and obey' was a good tongue in cheek at times British crime film.
