Gone to that great summit in the sky - New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary, who along with Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first to conquer Mount Everest, has died, Prime Minister Helen Clark said on Friday.
We haven't had a RIP thread for ages ......... and Joe must be still asleep!

I'm sure I posted on an Ed thread last night! I can still remember dad and I reading details from the newspaper about your epic ascent. I can also remember my class at Friarswood Primary school going to watch the Everest film at the cinema in Newcastle (Gaumont?) with our teacher, Mr Hall.
I'm sure the Sherpa people of Nepal will be in mourning today at the death of someone who did so much for their welfare in your later years.
RIP Ed.

Who should get 'wheeled' in a situation like this - the original, brilliantly written post or the pale imitation? ???
