I particularly loved the time,I think towards the end of the first half, when Liverpool thought they would try to match us physically and a few tackles from our lads convinced them it was not a good idea.

What I'm getting scared about is that we seem to put too much pressure on Ethers and Pennant. WHen these two receive the ball (normally around the half way line) it's as if the expectation is for them to take on their man and deliver.
It would be much better to be able to keep possession a little bit and deliver Ethers/Pennant the ball when they're much closer to the byline, meaning that they can whip in a first time ball without having to take anyone on.
EDIT: But in football defending is the half the game too. and we're probably top 5 in the league for that. can only think of man united, man city and chelsea who defend better than us.

Exactly. And my reply to the OP...."Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" Eleven players prepared to give 110% for the club looks pretty good to me.

Some of you took my point wrongly,i was delighted with the result and just questioned how we evolve. Yes i was at the game lol. It's hardly the kind of game for discussing "evolution" though is it? If we'd played Fulham, Wigan, Blackburn etc at home that'd be one thing. We came up against a far superior team and did what we had to do.

We could have done things better, we could have perhaps kept the ball a bit more but we were up against genuine Top 4 contenders.
Great result, outstanding defensive display (as a team, not just the back 5).
Delighted; no complaints.

It's all relative and to get wins against teams such as Liverpool we simply have to put in gritty performances like we did on Saturday.

There were actually a few times where we had their defence all over the place. Unfortunately MOTD didnt show it

I have heard a few criticisms that we didn't look that much better despite spending 22M on the team but it's worth remembering that since we last played Liverpool at the Brit they have invested well in excess of £100M in their team while we have invested a mere £24M (including the £2M we spent on Pennant in Jan).
I think Sunderland away next week will be a much better gauge of how we have progressed.

Our style of play was awful to watch; we had no attacking intent and looked a bit lost in the final third of the pitch. Defensively we were superb but we defended for far too long and far too deep.

They did play well though and will have a very good season. I suspect they won't lose that many and our win will look better and better as the season progresses. We won't have to defend like we have done against Chelsea and Liverpool in all our home games. Let's get the visit of the Shit out of the way and then we can start to see how we are really looking, offensively speaking.

I say it as I see it if you can’t handle the truth stay away from the board or just read the happy clapping threads that say how great we are and what a god Pulis is.

Some people expect too much, too quick. This is one of the reasons Pulis tries to keep feet on the ground when the going is good, like it is now.
Some people get delusions of grandeur and expect us to be dicking the likes of Liverpool when the reality is far different.
Even with the investment Pulis has made in the team we are still playing catch up to the likes of Liverpool. Where we have spent 20+ Million they have spent at least 4 times that amount.
When we first came up I looked at the games against the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea etc as zero pointers; with the attitude that anything we get is a bonus. 4 years in and I still have that outlook, I look at the 4 points earned against Chelsea and Liverpool as a bonus.
Our season is determined on the results against the likes of Fulham, Sunderland, WBA et al. not Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd.
As far as we have come there is still a massive gap between us and the top teams and we have to expect to be on the back foot when we play the top 4 or 5.
That’s not to say we can’t compete, we just need to be realistic and not get carried away.

We're never going to play open, expansive football but we are trying to evolve slowly into a better footballing side. We've defended marvellously so far, which has given us a much better chance at winning games. We've also taken the opportunities that have fallen to us which, for Stoke, is a rarity. We can play better as an attacking force and we do need Pennant and Etherington to hit some form sooner rather than later but as long as we're getting results, you won't see me moaning. This run isn't going to last forever, so I'd say enjoy it while you can. It's not often we're in a Champions League spot. I fully expect us to return to mid-table after the Sunderland and Man Utd games.

Stoke need to learn to keep better possession in the final two thirds, especially the middle one. This would reduce the pressure on the back 5 and, in the case of Saturday, see us create more chances against a team who despite the money spent IMHO were distinctly average, especially at the back.
Stoke have shelled out 22 million quid - expectations are going to rise, despite what TP and his devotees say or want.
For the record and the mentally challenged, this doesn't mean I EXPECTED to play Liverpool off the park and dick them 5 nil.

I can see both sides , I am delighted was a defensive masterclass ,but let's not delude ourselves the facts are you get away with that type of wastefulness only once / twice a season . IMO there was so many good performances but at the same time so many poor ones , a strange game but I Agee we should just rejoice at the result and I also agree its not really a game we should be setting as a benchmark , were awesome defensively but shocking at inviting pressure but fuck it we won let's move on !
