Just been carrying out a bit of research on the 70s in Hanley Library. It comes as a shock to see how close City were to being relegated that season and to compound the problems Waddington got done for drink driving.
Great period for bands though with Rory Gallagher in Feb, Elton John at the Heavy Steam Machine at the beginning of March and Bowie at the end of the month at the Vicky Hall. Focus in May as well. I saw all except Bowie.
It was enjoyable looking the stories though. It looks like Stoke's season was turned around by a 2-1 win against Coventry

That was the season after we won the League Cup of course and when you look at it in a bit more detail it was actually quite an horrific one. We lost our first ten away league matches, were knocked out of all cup competitions at the first stage and even lost away at West Brom. On top of that we suffered the tragedy of losing the services of Gordon Banks after his car crash. Like you say though, our season turned on a home win against Coventry and we won six of our last eight matches to save ourselves. www.stokecity-mad.co.uk/footydb/loadtmrs.asp?ssnno=102&teamno=501Manchester City away in the FA Cup: www.youtube.com/user/mcfcvideos#p/search/0/FBBEaFD99aA

Not quite. Some of us trudged to Meadow Lane, very confident of reaching the QF (again) of the League Cup, and equally confident of the quality of our recent (expensive) signing to replace Banksie. Step forward Michael (?) McDonald. He had a complete 'mare, and I am not sure he ever played again.

Waddo was far from perfect (same as TP) but I don't think some people realise how lucky we are to have Pulis. I wonder if we'll look back at TP in 40 years time the same way we look back at Waddo and the 70's today

It would have been a Saturday in early 91 and I caught the train from Crewe to Stoke. In the same carriage was Waddington on his own and going to a match. He looked very forlorn and unwell and I regret not talking to him. Because I saw some memorable games at Stoke. He died about two years later.

Our promotion season changed after a 2-1 against Coventry too.

We had some bad slumps with Waddo. Some of which, if we had something similar now the gaffers head would be called for. It doesn't indicate that Waddo was loved it shows how much the game and the surrounding kerfuffle have changed.

It's ridiculous now. I wonder why anyone would want that profession. Increasing pressure however unfeasible the demands you have to deliver.
The England manager's job is more impossible than ever.

Still incredible to me that Waddo was ultimately hounded out of the place.
I remember the "Waddington out" chants the season he left like it was yesterday.
Football managers are like boxers, very few manage a dignified exit while at the height of their powers.

Waddington out echoed long and loud. I didn't really know what it meant. Waddo resigned on the Monday. He was the ultimate scapegoat for the Butler St stand not being insured.

I remember being dismayed in March 73 when Spurs won OUR cup
