The body of a 58-year-old man has been found under ice at Westport Lake, near Tunstall.
The discovery was made at 10.15am yesterday by Raymond Frazer, aged 53, from Bradwell, who was walking his dog at the beauty spot.
He said: "I found a coat and a hat on the side of the old muck works. Then I saw a bloke floating under the ice. I was at Westport Lake on Saturday night and it wasn't frozen then so it must have happened overnight."
The death was not being treated as suspicious.
A spokesman said: "The deceased is understood to be a local man but no details will be released until his family have been made aware.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Stoke CID on 08453 302010."
