I've just now stumbled onto this news and had no idea. Didn't know Stepehe as well as Norwich Stokie, but spent time at his home, watching Stoke on Sky due to his generosity. Also, travelled with him & Jack (and Graham) to several games over past years and always enjoyed his company. At a complete loss to say any more, very shocked both by this awful news and just finding out so long after this tragedy. Thanks for your company Steve, RIP and God bless.
Graham - any way to contact you outside of this forum? Ron

First time I have been on here for about 6weeks due to computer problems ,and the first thing I see is this thread about the untimely death of winger , as many have said he was a great contributor to this forum and I enjoyed his books and his witty comments ,a very sad loss. R.I.P.

I've sat right by Stephen since we've been in the Premiership then Graham and didn't even realise it was him. A modest man I guess given his talent, always chuckling at the humour that abounds in that area including "linesman, you're an idiot" in the first half of every game'

I never knowingly met him but Stephen's passing has absolutely shocked me to the core. A wonderful writer, one of the few contributors on the boards whose words were always worth reading and clearly a lovely man. It was no age to go but you clearly packed a lifetime or twos experiences into those 48 years. Thanks for the name check in SSTL, a genuine thrill at the time and a lovely touch. You had a hell of a lot of class.

Oh dear! What terribly sad news! I haven't been on here for a while, so I had absolutely no knowledge of this sad event.
I didn't know Stephen personally. But I've read the book (she stood there...) and read the posts for many years. The book was a wonderful read, just summed up most of our time away from the top flight. The posts were often amusing and quite often made me smile.
I'm so very sorry to hear this sad news and my sincere condolences go out to all his family and friends.
RIP Stephen/Winger

To all. I've had a number of enquiries if there is a charity to donate to in memory of winger. The collection at the funeral will be for one of his favourite charities (linked below) and having spoken to his partner, Trezza, she thinks any donations from you would be most welcomed at the same charity. So, if you'd like to send a donation of whatever denomination, please do so and mention that you're doing so for the memory of winger. www.greyhoundgap.org.uk/Thank you all. OS.

'She Stood There Laughing' is a football classic. Just over a month ago ago I told Stephen this, I don't think he realised just how good it is. Since buying the book back in 2004 I've been in regular banter with Stephen - me a Coventry City season ticket holder. His book inspired me to write - when I asked for advice it was forthcoming - he gave up his own time for others. Each time we sacked a manager there would be an email winging its way to me, if we hit the headlines I would expect humour and wit.
Stoke-Coventry moments were shared - Chris Iwelumo's penalty which rebounded off both posts and in via our keeper's backside in 2004 at Highfield Road. The skills of Bjarni Gudjonsson, the FA Cup fifth round at the Victoria Ground en route to our Wembley spectacular in 1987. The last contact I had discussed Ian Painter's penalty which smashed against Steve Ogrizovic's bar in May 1985 - if it had gone in we would have been down.
I've just written the 'Coventry City Miscellany' following on from 'Coventry City On This Day' - I even sent him a copy for all the Stoke linked days in the sky blue calendar. As a tribute I intend to line a small dedication to Stephen in the Miscellany book - along with my mum - both taken far too early.
I wish Potters fans all the best for the forthcoming season and my thoughts go to Stephen's family.
All the best
Steve Phelps

Thank you, Steve. Those are lovely memories. After being an artistic gayer, he was a proper football man. Take care. Now for you others, including those who didn't know him personally, I've put together a memorial vid of winger, which includes his quick dip in the sea at Nice in his underpants (typical winger), and many scenes from the infamous Dender Bender trip (done especially to piss Victor Momo off ), but also for many of his close family and for the friendships he created. His Mum and his son, Jack-the-Mogul, are also in it. In true winger style, although it's called The Final, I've treated that game like winger did the Norwich game in SSTL. The song is one of winger's favourite songs, chosen by his partner, Trezza, who is shown in the penultimate clip. If you wonder what the boys are doing at the end; they're saying exactly what I said to winger on many occasions: You're like my arse, Boy! The Final.OS.

Excellent Mick - captures him well - well done for the pics and the music. Glad you included his manbag! The manbag was his trademark, John. He took some severe shit over that. I've just been thinking. The true value of this board is immeasurable when you consider that every friendship and every association in that clip were due entirely to this messageboard. That's one hell of an achievement, and one that Smudge and Co could never have conceived when they first set it up. I'm sure there are many other friendships born of this medium. I reckon we owe Smudge and Co - and all the moderators - a great debt of gratitude, and I for one don't feel as if I'm being sickofantic when I offer them my sincere thanks. And then, when one of our own passes away, just as now with this condolences thread, and as I found out all those years ago when my wife died, there's an 'Oatcake Family', and the kind words one receives really do help lessen the pain. We should be immensely proud of this forum when it's at its best. Tomorrow, when I attend the funeral, I'll do my best to represent you all. OS.

I have hijacked my partners account as I could not create my own but am Lisa the founder of Greyhound Gap. I wanted to add to this thread to thank those who sent a donation to ourselves in Memory of a wonderful and much loved man. I have read this thread over the last couple of weeks with lots of tears and lots of laughter.
Stephen was very kind to us over the years, although we operate as a rescue nationally I am born and bred in Stoke and our base is here in Stoke on Trent. He was kind with both time, donations of signed books to raise funds and humour. Every conversation, email or meeting I had with Stephen left me thinking or laughing but always smiling he was one of a kind. I am greatful to have had the pleasure of his humour over the years and he will be sadly missed.
My thoughts are very much today with Trezza, Jack, Mick and the rest of his family and I am sure they will give him a wonderful send off.
RIP Stephen one of the good ones. Much Love xx

Stephen Foster, the designer of the Spitfire, the Captain of the Titanic, Anthea Turner and the founder of Greyhound Gap - Stoke has given so much to the world! ;D Good luck with Greyhound Gap - I have a rescue dog myself and animal rescue organisations have always been close to my heart.

Quality stuff there Mick....all apart from the shots of Winger in trunks. No one needs to see that - not even in passing!
Hope today went as well as it could do, and it was the special send off that he deserved.
cheers Chris
