Holy Shit!!!! I return to Atlanta after a fabulous break Oatie free and log on for a catch up and this is what hits me. Absolutely tragic news. Its always sad to lose a fellow passionate Stokie, but the loss of Stephen is hard to bear. His writing resonated with all passionate Stoke fans and encapsulated the true meaning of being a mad potter. His posts as Winger were always a joy to read and made a huge contribution to debate over the many years of posting. Although I didnt know him I sat by him a couple of times at away games and we both grumbled at TP's style of play. His wit was infectious. His underated books leave a fitting legacy to a talented man who was Stoke City to the core. I implore everyone who hasn't read them to go and do so, there are smiles on every page. RIP Stephen and heartfelt sympathy to all who knew him, it must be an awful time to lose a talented man with still so much more to give.

Awful news, only just seen this and it has brought tears to the eyes.
As an exiled stoke, Stephens books remind me of home and what it is like to follow your club, and why you do.
RIP Winger you will be missed.

Can't believe it. I loved reading his books. Like Martin Smith, I didn't always agree with his opinions, especially about TP. He wrote with a wit, passion intelligence and honesty. Stephen was our very own Nick Hornby, perfectly expressing how our lives and fortunes of our team are inextricably linked. I loved the detail - the night he described celebrating promotion to the Premiership and being able to hear the singing from two different pubs and enjoying an Indian meal in Shaffers opposite one of them. Living in Dresden I shall never forget the wonderful atmosphere that night that he conveyed so well. I'm looking forward to reading his latest and sadly his last book, The Final. Wish I'd met you Stephen, but through your writing it feels like I got to know you. Love, best wishes and condolences to your family and friends. Ant.

I sat in a functional seminar room with Stephen at UEA many, many years ago. I didn't know who he was then, of course. He never said anything: just sat there mentally stockpiling everyone else's ideas. Genius steals, innit.
He was in so many ways the anti-Nick Hornby. Which is why we (and so many others) loved him so. All very, very sad.x

RIP winger, I've shed more than a few tears reading this thread.
We exchanged quite a few emails over the years and always planned to meet up at 'some point' as Norwich is only an hour away. I'm gutted we never got around to it.
Loved his books, SSTL should be compulsory for Stoke fans.
I'm still struggling to take it in to be honest.
Sincerest condolences to his family.

Sad news indeed, a very witty writer. If for nothing else I'll be forever grateful for his 'script' of the dialogue between the ladies in the ticket office at Stoke and a potential ticket purchaser in his first book.................pure magic and 100% accurate!!!!! RIP Stephen and try to swing a few results for us!!!!!

Commiserations to Steve’s Stokie family from a Brentford fan.
Was stunned and saddened to hear the news yesterday. Although I only met him on a handful of occasions I've been spending a bit of time in Norwich on business recently and when I had a couple of days of meetings Steve and Trezza (and Dylan!) were good enough to put me up for the night and cook me dinner (and with only minor misgivings on her part about his strange friends from the internet). It was a lovely evening and a kind gesture, totally in keeping with what I knew of winger.
RIP

Just logged on... lying on the living room floor, dog spread out by the side of me, looking at me wanting a walk...can't really take the news in, very sad.
He was a brilliant writer, who could connect with not only football fans.
Sincere condolences to his family.

But it articulated very clearly the absurdity and masochistic pleasure that following SCFC (and most clubs in fact) has over the years necessarily involved.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends, many I know who post here. Such terrible sad news, I feel quite empty. He has left such a wonderful legacy though, like many I bought The Final just the other day. His Stoke books really put in to words what it is to be a Stoke fan. Like him I'm an exile (Plymouth not Norwich) and don't get to nearly as many games as I'd like to but where you can take the man out of Stoke, Winger so eloquently illustrates that you can never take Stoke out of the man. I didn't know him personally bar a few odd exchanges years back when I was hongkongdave but I'll miss his posts on here. RIP winger.

Although I rarely post, I feel the need to on this occasion.
I did not know Stephen but had the pleasure of speaking to him at the City Museum and Art Gallery last year, just to let him know how much I enjoyed reading his work. I'm glad I did.
Such a terrible shock, very sad news indeed.
My thoughts are with family and friends.

Intelligent bloke and a massive tragedy at that age

Utter shock and dismay - I am so sad to hear this
Having read his two Stoke City books (this first one many times over), Walking Ollie and Working Class Hero I can only say what a wonderful author he was. As a guy who I met many times too he was truly special and if ever there was a case that 'the good die young' this is it.
I can only pass on my sincere condolences to the family

Terribly sad news. I never met Winger but, like many on here, I feel like I did. Really enjoyed 'She Stood There Laughing', as did my Dad - nobody will ever put it better, what it means to be a Stokie. RIP Stephen - deepest sympathies to your family.

Wow. Just wow. I'm dumbstruck, dumbfounded and feel truly mournful on reading such sad news. We've lost a wonderful, witty man and my deepest sympathy go to his family and close friends.
To this day it still brings a smile to my face knowing that, a book, yes, a real, "proper" book, in my bloomin' bookcase, has my (internet) name in it. It shocked me they day I found it, almost as much as seeing this thread on the oatcake today.
Thanks for all the memories Winger.
RIP
