Our last stint in the country's top league lasted 6 seasons and all but the 1982/83 season were mainly spent avoiding relegation. My first 2 season's watching Stoke City were in the old Div 2 from 77-79 and as a young lad i couldn't wait to see Stoke in Division 1.My memories of the early 1979/80 season was beating Coventry and Spurs at home but struggling for most of that season. My only away that season was a treat from my parents to Coventry in Nov '79,we won 3-1 if i recall correctly.Over the next 6 years i missed very few home games, and attended more aways as i got older. They were my formative years of Stoke in the top league.I remember the 1983/84 home run to avoid relegation, something like 7 straight home wins. The 79-85 years seem along time ago now,a distant memory. What are your best/worst and indifferent memories of the 79-85 era?

Stopped going after we sold the crown jewels to pay for the Butler roof, so I barely saw a game between 78 and when Macari arrived. Barely missed a game since.
I have no memories of those years because the tight-fisted bastards on the board stole my dreams and left me heart-broken. It still makes me angry/sad now.

I was at Coventry Lanchester Poly and lived about 200yds from Highfield Road. I think it was 3-2. It was in the days of the foul red pinstripes that looked pink from any distance. I remember Robbie James was massively overweight and Chamberlain played a blinder that day.

My best memories were of some fantastic football from the likes of Chamberlain,Mickey Thomas etc and my worst is of that arsehole Richie Barker deciding we didn't need to use midfield

I don't remember a ceaseless battle with relegation and neither do the league tables

Think that game was a few years later mate.Robbie James and Chambo were early 80's players. The 79 visit to Highfield Rd was the time of Roger Jones,Geoff Scott,Adrian Heath and Garth Crooks.I'm really struggling to remember if we won 3-1 or 3-2.I'm sure Crooks got 2 that day.My Dad took me on the train and there were loads of Stokies on it.

I remember the Coventry and Spurs home games mate and i'm pretty sure we lost at Forest 1-0 in between those 2 games to a late O'Neill goal.I was very worried when we went up the season before under Durban but those 2 home games gave me the belief that we could compete with the best in the league. Also remember both games against Derby that season because obviously living there pride was at stake and the game was won with a late Garth Crooks goal after chucking away a two goal lead and then at the Baseball Ground we drew 2-2 with Jeff Cook getting a couple i think? Then the last game of the season at West Brom which was my 1st away game without the old man going with me and the thing that sticks in my mind despite winning 1-0 was the long walk from Smethick Rolfe St station.

During this period we had family living in Etwall who were big Derby fans. The Stoke/Derby games always had a bit more riding on them. They still live that way, needless to say i now i enjoy discussing football more than they do.

That was after the 0-0 draw which was covered on MOTD(last no doubt ). I remember 2 visits to Anfield (FA Cup and a League game). in the same season.Richie Barker sent a 10-0-1 formation for the cup game.We lost 2-0.He went more attack minded in the league game and we lost 5-1.Liverpool did hand us a few thrashings in those days.Apart from 83/4 when we beat them at home 2-0.

I went my first game in the 79/80 season against the arse at the vic. Don't remember much about it to be honest. It was the 82/83 season when i really started to get proper into it. I recall a game against the hammers when we beat them 5-2, chambo was on fire and it was the first time i'd ever seen disturbances round the ground and stuff. Bearing in mind that i lived in shropshire as a kid the 84/85 season was a nightmare in many ways, every monday at school i would get ripped to fuck by the other kids (the gloryhunters of the day) who supported liverpool mostly, there were a few villa and wolves as well. I held my head high though in the knowledge that me and my dad had travelled to most of the home games that season and at least the pain was real and we had experienced it first hand.

I recall a game against the hammers when we beat them 5-2 I'm only 21 but I bought a fanzine at Upton Park 6 or so years ago (we lost 2-0, night match). There was an article in there where the guy was on about this match, and I think the general gist of it was basically bigging Stoke up and saying we're a proper club. I think going to a match and having the shit kicked through you and vice versa and crapping your pants for 90 minutes + gave him that impression.

Loved those days..from relegation , through the first dire season down, then promotion and then 79/80 onwards back in the top flight with the 'big boys' but...
FV was at it's height and once the early shine of promotion had worn off lots of people chose to turn their back on footie , plenty use to go missing when dodgy away games came around..indeed home attendances ( ours and others ) tell the real story of FV...as do the turnouts for england and their make-up...though the Euro champs in Italy had much to do with family type fans turning their back on England
Some seriously dodgy days out , with some suicidally small followings , but travelled by train everywhere and loved every minute of it , relegation had done wonders for the dependability and togetherness of our away followings ..and you'd see Stoke followings , all be it small at places we seldom ever turned out for previously.

The standout game for me during that time was the 4-4 with Luton. The first season that the goalie got sent off for a pro-foul, and Foxie walked that day. Was on MOTD and a major talking point as another game that day the goalie had a yellow and stayed on ( I think it was Grobbellaer).
Great days indeed, loved the midfield of Thomas, James, McIlroy and Chamberlain what a great footballing side.

The thing i remember from my formative Stoke aways, did a few during the 77-79 Div2 years(including Meadow Lane) was the dress code. There was no replica shirts in them days. But if you wanted to show your colours you would wear a scarf around your wrist.I remember a game at Derby and standing behind a bloke who had a denim jacket on with loads of sew on badges on it.Bit like Mabel and her scarf nowadays but sew on badges were massive at the time.

Chambo was really something else ..until he got injured and his hamstring was never really the same...West Ham in league cup and Devonshire springs to mind..but could be the years playing tricks

The 82/3 season team were a joy to watch,in all honesty a better team than that of last season.Very similiar to last seasons in terms of 2 wingers, decent centre halfs but a better midfield.Played attractive football and scored more goals. All about opinions, and i was young but the 1982/83 side was better than last seasons team.

Those were the days Bracewell who hardly ever gets mentioned on here was shear class. From this era Heath Bracewell and the donkey Chapman went on to win the title with other clubs. Hudson's return was a great day.
