My new Nokia mobile has this infrared thingymajig. What does this allow me to do that my previous brick couldn't (I don't like reading manuals)?

You can communicate with a computer if it has an infrared port or an infrared adaptor fitted.
These days "bluetooth" tends to be the preferred method and the better modern phones have that. Bluetooth is better because (amongst other things) you don't need to have the ports in line of sight. Bluetooth also means you can communicate with other equipment such as a cordless headset. Its a very short range broad band radio system.

Bth, as you don't read manuals, your phone might have bluetooth as well as infrared - you can't tell if it has just by looking at it. My Sony Ericsson T68i has both. Time to get the manual out mate!
