...What the fucks your AVATAR (or whatever they are called...your piccie) about?
No Surrender? I heard it from the children at the back on Saturday and shook my head - Most of them wouldn't know ANYTHING about the troubles in Northern Ireland let alone singing songs glorifying the Loyalist Paramilitaries (or 'terrorists' as the rest of the world would call them)
I'm not Catholic, was christened Protestant but choose not to follow religion, as it causes more war and death than any disease or plague. Singing silly songs and being proud of murderers (and mainly drug dealers nowadays) is nothing to shout about.
Just have a think (I'm sure you meant no offence, just a bit of a laugh...) or go online and look into it - There nothing to be proud about on either side of the Irish divide where violence is involved.

Forgive me for my ignorance but I still don't see why people can get offended by people singing "No Surrender" to a terrorist organisation.
Would you say the same if they were singing "No Surrender" to Al-Queda?

Not the same RRP
having spent a lot of my childhood in Armagh and witnessing the troubles at very close quarters, it astonishes me when these individuals come out with this. Would love to know how many actually are aware of what they are singing or are just sheep. Think the answer is pretty obvious.
Doesn't belong on here or at football IMHO. if the admin are OK with it then fair enough.

Its not really a show of defiance by the innocents to a terrorist organisation is it RRP?
Its the war cry of other terrorists that have caused equal carnage and disruption to the peace process.
If it means nothing but freedom, then why have the our hooligans taken it as there anthem as they smash and destroy central Europe?
And besides, the 'war' finished about 5 years ago. Only a matter of time before the IRA disbands in my opinion. Will the 'peaceful' UDA etc give up there weapons as well?

It's a tough one, I suppose.
The people singing it (to which I have sung one or two times) don't really know what it's about. It's easy to get caught up in the emotion of a game and sing any old bollocks. I mean, the "Harry Roberts song", I wouldn't glorify the killing of innocent policemen but I have sung that song a few times before. To be honest, when "the boys" score they could sing almost (and I stress almost) anything and I would sing along with it.
I think we should be a lot more alarmed at the redition of "If you all hate Paki's clap your hands" (to which I did not clap my hands or sing) than we should about a song where no-one knows what they're going on about.

I was one of "children" at the back on saturday, and I never joined in the "no surrender" chant. It a fucking football match not a battle ;D The chant of "if you all hate paki's clap your hands" was a disgrace. When i was walking down the stps after the game I heard a bloke complaining to a steward about the things that were being sung, and that he shouldnt have to listen to that kind of thing, as he was with a kid. Im all for chanting STOKE CHANTS at the game, but none of that bollocks

As I posted above RRP. there are so many sheep at games. I'm sure if someone put an anti Pakistani Avatar on here there's be uproar. Like I said, I'd bet the majority who sing this "No Surrender" are kids trying to be boys who have little idea what they're singing about.
I can remember a few man City fans giving loads to some Irish lads ( Dublin) in Genoa at the World Cup a few years back. They had no idea what the song meant but had heard it before.

Totally off the subject here: But there was one lad in block 19 sat behind me who every time someone did something slightly wrong proceeded to verbally abuse them. Now I'm all for constructive critiscm but can you tell me how how Gifton (for example) can use being called a "prick" to improve his game. This lad was a complete and utter wanker, the sort I'd like to never see again at the ground. And the best of it all, he had a younger brother (I think it must have been his younger brother) who I can remember being a prick at the Crwho? (or Crwho? as it will be changed to) game, slating every guy on the pitch. He had this high pitch voice (I'm sure his balls are gonna drop any day soon ) that sent a shiver dwon my spine evertime he used the "wank" or "prick". And to both of them lads I would like to: [glow=red,2,300][/glow] I tell ya what, I'm really getting some things of me mind tonight ;D

Used to have a real slob of a woman behind me at the Vic who used to slag off every Stoke player. One game after Sandford had made a real heavy tackle she came out with the comment "Hope you've broke your bloody leg Sandford"!!!!!! I mean....our own player. You can't chose at times who you sit next to, reading some of this on here today am glad I don't sit near a couple I've read thoughts of today..
Amazing how brave with their comments in the stands some individuals are.

I still wonder why some people go to the game though JR? I mean throughout every good/bad, happy or sad I think there is something really deep down that is enjoying the game. But for these people they are there to verbally abuse peole, the same people that they will be celebrating for if they score. The mind boggles...... There are some things in life that confuse me (like why do milkem have to get up so early? ???) and this is one of those things

It's the old... I pay my money I'm entitled to my opinion thing.
Maybe so but not everyone wants to hear it.
You'd think milkmen would wait 'till the husbands had gone to work. Isn't that a perk of the job?
Why do folk rush to get on a plane when they have an allocated seat?
Why do blokes who work in record shops think they're pop stars?

LOL, classics JR. A few more, Why do we pronounce 'Country' as 'Cuntry', but 'County' as 'County', despite them beig spelt, almost, the same? Why do we put 'silent' letters in words? (If there silent, then what's the frigging point in being there?!!!) Why is the atmosphere so shit in the John Smiths stand ;D? Why, when I sit in the John Smiths, are my prawn sandwiches always a bit stale? ;D

Q1. Why do milkmen have to get up so early? You'd think they'd would wait 'till the husbands had gone to work. Isn't that a perk of the job? A. At my house, the milk arrives just as my dad leaves for work (seriously), I might have to ask about that one. Edit 2- I've thought about this one as well. It's because milkmen need to stop in the middle of small roads, and on the curb of bigger roads. Thus to cause a minimum amount of traffic disruption, milkmen go out when there are less cars on the road, i.e. between 6 and 9 in the morning. Q2. Why do folk rush to get on a plane when they have an allocated seat? A. To get away from you and your tales of the world JR. That's something which will probably be in the next Peter Kay stand-up actually. Edit- I had a think about this one. It's because people are generally excited when going on holiday and express this by rushing onto the plane even though it makes no difference at all. However, for you JR the novelty has gone because you are such a jet-set traveller. Bingo! Q3. Why do blokes who work in record shops think they're pop stars? A. Stop going into shit record shops JR. Q4. a) Why do we pronounce 'Country' as 'Cuntry', but 'County' as 'County', despite them beig spelt, almost, the same? b) Why do we put 'silent' letters in words? A. The English language is fucked up. Q5. a) Why is the atmosphere so shit in the John Smiths stand? b) Why, when I sit in the John Smiths, are my prawn sandwiches always a bit stale? A. Because of the fumes from the incinerator. I can now go to sleep safe in the knowledge that I have educated, informed and entertained.... ;D

The No surrender chant is the anthem of the thugs who attach themselves to the England team.
When you hear that song at a football match its less to do with being opposed to terorism and more to do with the thugs letting you know that they are there.
Anyone who joins in with it is effectively collaborating with them.

To be fair he seems a pretty bright lad from what I've read (also played a bit part in the whole 'The Twelth Man' thing), and there are people of all ages that sing 'No Surrender' for apparently no reason, unless they actually believe in the song?!
He can't have it both ways though can he? By all means sing the song if thats what he believes is right, but don't be surprised if it eventually leads to either getting thrown out of the ground at the request of someone that takes offence, or a confrontation with another fan.
Joe has provided the best idea of what singing this chant is all about and if I was BEB (or anyone for that matter) I'd think pretty seriously before getting involved in the singing of it again.

It is daft just to sing a song for the sake of singing - if you do not agree (or in this case, fully understand) with the content - keep your gob shut!
I personally still refuse to sing "City till I die" - never a stoke song, and as far as I am concerned never will be!

Why would people look at me as being a hooligan? Because i sing a song? Yes i dont know much about the IRA, nor do i care to learn anymore, I know what they have done however, And i for one dont like it, so i agree with the song NO SURRENDER. As for the racist chanting its up to whoever decides to sing it. Your as narrow minded as the people who say "youths who wear burberry are all hooligans". If i choose to sing a song its up to me, But dont accuse me of being a hooligan because of a stupid song, Because i dont accuse you of being a librarian that sits in the john smiths stand because your moaning about us singing a song. Is delilah ok with you because it has a swear word in it? This is not a dig at anyone btw.. Just arguing my point, So dont get the hump with me, Or put a citizans arrest on me when you see me wearing my burberry socks BeB

BeB this it quite difficult to explain as you are young enough to have missed much of the trouble in Northern Ireland.
If "No Surrender" had been the song sung by innocent Irish Protestants (or citizens of any religion) then there would be no harm in it. But it wasn't - it was the anthem of Protestant Terrorists who were just as bad as the IRA in many ways. Indeed, you could argue that the discrimination by hard line Protestants against Catholics in the 1960s led to the troubles which (sort of )ended only a few years back.
So your anthem against the IRA isn't just a protest song it is one which strikes fear into many Irish Protestants as well as Catholics.
I happen to have Irish Catholic and Protestant family members (by marriage) and all of them detest the protest songs who ever sings them or whichever "side" the songs support.
This isn't a lecture - you couldn't be expected to know know any of this - it is an explanation which might help you to understand why so many people hate "your" anthem.

|
Post by bebscfc on Feb 3, 2004 19:01:05 GMT
Not my anthem, because i am not an irish terrorist, or an English Hooligan.
Your explination has opend my eyes a bit, I never realised that the protestants did anything, I have a mate who is irish and his dad was involved in the UDA, and i often sing their song because its catchy, but i always saw the IRA as the "bad guys" and thought that song was basically telling the IRA to do one.
