I don't give a toss about whether "anyone in Birmingham gives a toss about Stoke". Or in Manchester, or Leeds, or anywhere else for that matter! It's as borderline as you can get as regards where the city lies geographically. Most people responding to this thread seem to identify more with the North-West, but I dare say if you were to canvas opinion nationally, it'd be 50:50; In my experience, the further north you go, the more likely we are to be in the midlands; Ask the folks down south and we're in the north. As with the whole Central / Granada thing, opinion about "where we belong ???" is split even amongst national companies and organisations that divide the country up into regions. (As an interesting aside and to add a little more to the whole north / south debate, I've even seen Sheffield, a part of Yorkshire last time I looked, regarded by one company as a midlands city!) What there is no denying though, is that Stoke and its "natives" ;D have more in common with their northern counterparts. That's not "anti-Birmingham prejudice", it's just the way it is. I had a similar debate with my colleagues in the Black Country, and they perceived things the same way. Seems to me that you're a bit touchy about the alleged anti-Brum thing. Some of us can agree to differ in a more civilised manner you know! Yours, A sad fuck

It's always the same people, I want to watch Granada, I wish I lived in Manchester, people from Birmingham have funny accents, why can't they speak like Garth Crooks.. it's pathetic.

Don't particularly want to watch Granada - or Carlton for that matter; 95% of TV these days is shite . Definitely don't want to live in Manchester - 90 mile round trip for home games? . People from Birmingham DO have a daft accent. But then so do people from Stoke. And Manchester. ;D It WOULD be pathetic if it was true. Like I said, a bit touchy aren't you? What's the problem? Beaten up by a Happy Mondays fan when you were younger?

How boring, why when you express an opinion about anything does some arse try to perform a freudian analysis?
Just to make it nice and simple for you, is Crewe a Northern town? Is it fook and it is geographically northerner than Stoke, the North starts at Lancashire or Yorkshire.

Interesting how Ejay's link talks about how in Roman/Saxon times Stoke-on-Trent was an important link between north and south... kinda sounds like the middle to me!
Today, in the world of Potteries talk, the proudest boast is "Ich bin ein Midlander"... with apologies to JFK!

In the current climate of nerdy films....I think it's more "Middle Earth"
doesn't really fall into either category IMHO. Midlands or North. Same as I don't categorise Nantwich as North West.
As someone above says we tend to fall into both TV and news categories which would suggest we're not really either.

Can we all agree to differ? Let's say Stoke is in its own little Twilight Zone (No-Man's Land?) - too far South to be proper North, to far North to be proper Midlands.
At the end of the day Warning: Use of Football Cliché, we all agree Stoke is unique and unlike alot of places in many ways. Wherever, whatever - We Are Stoke!

OK then. S-o-T is slap bang in the bloody midlands. Do you actually realise just how far "The North" stretches goin' up to Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick and Carlisle? THAT'S Northern!! You wouldn't consider Manchester to be Midlands, would you? But it's pretty damn near bein' in the middle third of the country.
Can't believe this is even up for debate!!
MIDLANDS!!!

Probably because when others tried to express opinions, someone started ranting on about anti-Birmingham prejudice.
I find a sense of humour helps on here!

I think of Stoke as midlands. It has the look and feel of poor post industrial midlands towns and reminds me a lot of home (blackcountry) just less hilly
A good way of telling north and south is the colour of the sand stone the North has yellow sand stone, and in the midlands its reddy pink. I think I remember your churches been reddy coloured I’m not sure.
Although saying that People in the south often deny the existence of midlands and ask you to plump for one or the other. When faced with this I generally say all the industrial mid to north midlands as north and the rich south midlands as south
Ps. Good point about Sheffield been considered by many in the far north as almost south as we are nr the boarder with Derbyshire.

Think this question has several answers..
1 If you were born and bred here then its's Mids
2. If you're living south of M Keynes then it's North
3. If, like myself, you're from the 'Real' north then SOT is too far south.
However geographically it is the midlands
