The draw on July 15th, 1st leg 28th July.
Assuming it'll be a few days before tickets go on sale - a bit of a scramble to find decently priced flights and accommodation.

Hearts would be nice ,but not in August as there will be no accommodation due to the Tatoo/Festival.

Each club has a UEFA coefficient based on: (1) that club's record in CL/EL over last 5 seasons, and (2) a percentage of their country's average performance over those 5 seasons. In each round the clubs are first listed in coefficient order. Any club in the top half of the list is "seeded" and will meet a team from the lower half. For the 3rd Qualifying Round Stoke will definitely be seeded and will therefore avoid all the bigger names involved at that stage (e.g. Atletico Madrid, AZ Alkmaar, Hapoel Tel-Aviv, Brugge and Sparta Prague). Hearts will be close to the middle and could be seeded or unseeded depending on who qualifies from the earlier rounds, so in broad terms think of a team like Hearts being the highest rated that Stoke could face. (But remember that the coefficients don't usually win matches - goals do). So Stoke could meet Dundee United, Omonia Nicosia, Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Westerlo, Legia Warsaw, St Patrick's Athletic or Bohemians, for example. The day before the draw the teams will be split into sets of 10 or 12 (half being seeded clubs). The seeds and non-seeds in each set will be deliberately averaged out in coefficient strength, and will avoid any country clashes. At this point you will know, within 5 (or6) clubs, who the opponents can be.

This is quite a good guide to who is likely to be a potential unseeded opponent in the 3rd qualifying round - assuming the higher-ranked team wins in the first 2 qualifying rounds
We'll definitely be seeded apparently, so we'll avoid all the big guns. There does seem to be an awful lot of crap amongst our likely opponents at this stage
SEEDS
Ath.Madrid AZ Alkmaar Hapoel Tel Aviv Sparta Prague Palermo/Roma Dinamo Bucharest (2Q) Salzburg (2Q) PAOK Thessaloniki Stoke City Fulham (1Q) Austria Vienna (2Q) Rapid Bucharest Young Boys Anorthosis Famagusta (2Q) Levski Sofia MSK Zilina (2Q) Nacional Funchal (2Q) Mainz Mlada Boleslav Rennes/Sochaux Bursaspor Vitoria Guimaraes Helsingborg Kaprpaty Lviv Vorskla Poltava (2Q) Brondby (2Q) Sheriff Tiraspol (2Q) Red Star Belgrade (2Q) Alania Vladikavkaz Elfsborg (1Q) Den Haag/Groningen (2Q)

IF Stoke reach the 4th Qualifying Round, the same priciples as above will operate for the draw. It is likely, but far from certain, that Stoke will be seeded in this round. If all earlier ties go with the higher coefficient (but of course this never really happens), the Stoke would be 32nd of 38 seeds. But losing clubs transfer in from the Champions' League so if any of these team lose in CLQ3 they will push Stoke down the list: Glasgow Rangers, Kobenhavn, BATE Borisov, Maccabi Haifa, Dinamo Zagreb, and Rosenborg. In addition the lowest placed CL entrant from the top 15 countries meet each other in CLQ3 (for countries 6-15) and CLQ4. Almost all of these have higher coefficients than Stoke, the 2 exceptions being Trabzonspor and Timisoara, so if either of those win in CLQ3 they will push higher ranked clubs into ELQ4 and again drop Stoke down the list. But equally if any of the clubs shown above Stoke in the list above by Fuller Magic are eliminated in ELQ2 or Q3 that will lift Stoke up the list.

Should come out ok from the 3rd round then, perhaps the big fear is getting a scandinavian team who are decent and 100% match fit as they are in midst of their season.

Following the suggestions from the link mensa provided who would you like to get, provided we get through to the group stages?
I don't want to go the same place twice, and fancy places/countries I haven't been before/wouldnt ordinarily go, but still look like they've got a bit to offer/could offer a quality couple of days away for us Stokies whilst still offering opportunity to progress:
3rd QR: Levadia Tallinn 4th QR: Levski Sofia or Slovan Bratislava Group Stage: Pot 1: Dinamo Kiev or Sporting Lisbon Pot 2: AEK Athens Pot 3: Dinamo Bucuresti

The line of dashes on the Kassiesa list has a meaning. Those above the line are guaranteed to be seeded but those below may be displaced by clubs defeated in Champions League Q3 and transferring to Europa League Q4. From Stoke's point of view it is better that clubs with a higher coefficient do not drop into the EL as this will push Stoke down the list and they may end up on the wrong side of the seeding divide. So look out for these clubs in the CL and hope they don't go out in Q Round 3 (it's OK if they go out in Round 2, which all except the first 2 are involved in): Glasgow Rangers, Kobenhavn, BATE Borisov, Maccabi Haifa, Dinamo Zagreb, and Rosenborg. Also the lowest placed CL entrant from the top 15 ranked countries meet each other in CLQ3 (countries 6-15) and CLQ4. Of the 10 clubs contesting this section of CLQ3 only 2 have lower coefficients than Stoke. If they win in CLQ3 they will push higher ranked teams into ELQ4. So hope that Trabzanspor and Vaslui lose in CLQ3. Also the projection for Group Stage pots assumes the higher ranked teams qualify in all matches. So once Q3 is passed you will be able to find out how many upsets are needed to lift Stoke into Pot 3, which in theory would give one weaker opponent.

Sorry if asked before, but if we progress to group stages, will we enter the Carling Cup at round 3?
|
|
|
Post by allardici on Jun 14, 2011 10:58:54 GMT
All 8 clubs involved in European competitions have exemption to the third round of the Carling Cup. In fact Birmingham's relegation exempts them from 2 rounds, so a preliminary round match is going to be held. So performance in Q3 and Q4 does not affect this, as the framework has been fixed: 2 clubs in prelim; 1 winner joins 69 other FL clubs (not B'ham) in R1; 35 winners join 13 PL clubs not in Europe in R2; 24 winners join 8 clubs in European comps in R3.
