On Radio Stoke now. I never got into jazz at all. I don't understand what it's about, although I can appreciate that the musicians are exceptional. There's been a couple of good tunes on. Any of you into jazz (the music) ? (Not Jizz) Can anyone recomend any (accesible) listening ? I've heard some Django Reinhardt (sp).

Never minded the likes of Louis Armstrong and his era , but all the later stuff leaves me cold, the likes of Cleo Laine and John Dankworth sets my teeth on edge. Prefer old blues, Muddy Waters etc.

I just heard a couple of bits of 'songs' that made my ears prick up. I thought, "that bit was bloody good", then the song went shit again.

www.marsdenjazzfestival.com/Get yourself to this freak fest. For the village that is thought to have inspired some of 'the league of gentlemen', it takes a lot to make it stranger but the jazz crowd manage it.

I was converted from jazz scepticism by the album "oh yeah!" by charles mingus and it's still by far my favourite jazz record. I think it's because it has a much more obvious drive to it than most jazz, no doubt due to charie's bass; generally a bit more linear sounding, not like john coltrane. I think it's be-bop, in any case it sounds like it belongs in a dark, drunken back alley jazz club. Quite like a small blast of Albert Ayler now and again too, sounds like 1000 cats being tortured though
Also if you're into HBO then get hold of Treme, a series about post katrina new orleans made by david simon, creator of the wire and generation kill. features loads of good stuff, not all jazz, what with it being in new orleans and everything, might be another good way in.

C'mon Pretz - jazz but not as we know it. The fave album and in my all time top ten is Can't buy a thrill and no real sign of jazz. And one of the sauciest album covers ever

Ta TPB, I'll check out "oh yeah". 'Be-bop' sounds like I can understand it. I don't know what HBO is ? Can you educate me ? Speaking of post-Katrina New Orleans, here's a thread about musicians helping out other musicians there. I sent a fiver cuz I was feeling flush at the time........ www.mimf.com/cgi-bin/WebX?14@164.LtZHaqv7Hbd.2@.1dcf5325/0Copy all of that & post it in your browser or else it won't work.

We are talking about the same album cover aren't we???? Educate me !!!!!! This is Jamster's personal copy of the album (as identified by the dubious looking secretions splattered about the cover ;D Cover art used to be such a bit part of possessing an album. It was something I would actually look forward to scrutinising and discussing with my mates when a favorite band brought an album out but since CD's came in, that art-form seems to have died the death. Do people even look at whatever art now comes with an MP3 album or whatever?

Well Pretzy we're reeling back the years now. I suppose coming from a band that had the nerve, no "balls", to name itself Steely Dan then the album cover should come as no surprise. Glorious rock/pop at it's most finest.

John Coltrane-My Favourite Things Miles Davis-In A Silent Way Charles Mingus-AH Hum (Maybe the best Double-Bass player ever) These are all albums not just songs.Jazz takes many many forms. All depends what type you are interested in mate.It took me years to like it tbh,but the trick I found was to substitute the lead guitar for the sax /trumpet whatever and hey presto it hits right home.Enjoy brother Rat

The Ceramic City Stompers were very well known and highly regarded in their day..... 1960s/70s onwards, etc.
