I forgot our defeat of Leeds in 1973-74, 3.2 after being 2.0 down against a team unbeaten in 29 games

Brilliant thread guys. Just puts into persective what us 30-40 year old Stokies have been though I'm 38 and started watching Stoke from around 81. ;D For me now back in the top tier after watching mainly 2nd and 3rd level dross for 20 years is heaven and still people moan But even that heaven is a distant dream from what you boys have witnissed being a Stokie. My dad is 70 and he tells me about Franklin, Soo, Eastham, Matthews and on and on and on! Jammy Barsteward ;D

yep
was at Wembley '72 and 1971-72 was the first season I went to all the home games. Went all the semis in both league cup and FA Cup except the match at Upton park
Didn't go my first away game until '74 though ( Coventry City)

Was just a youngster but my dad took me.
"Wembley 72" what a day, never to be forgotton.
Went all 4 FA cup semis as well, was more gutted at Villa Park when we didnt play well and lost 2-0, such an anti-climax after the fantastic display at Hillsboro.
Will never forgive that C..t Pat Partridge, adding on all that extra time when their was hardly an injury. Remember in those days the trainers used a cold sponge, the players soon got up.

Count me in at Wembley....just an unbelievable experience to see the team you love walk out at wembley in a major cup final and then to win it and a lap of honour is really the stuff of dreams. For ukyestony and his followers of anti cup football who dont give a stuff. Its the hope that another day in the not too distant future a new generation of potters fans will live the dream. p.s every major final at wembley/cardiff were just wonderful experiences. I loved Brentford at Cardiff...what was it 40k+ Stokies taking over Cardiff city centre....happy days!

I was in the Army at that time, and was stationed in Belize C/America. We were in the Jungle during that week, but I was the radio operator, and kept getting in touch with base, and asking the latest score.

I missed Ajax away, WHam away and the Goodison replay, saw pretty much all the others.
Went by coach to Wembley with my Dad, can remember going down the ground at about 4 in the morning for tickets with him, the queue was huge then!
Villa Park v Arsenal we were in with the Arse fans, Dad had had a rare ticket problem, wasn't too difficult staying quiet for that game, think the team had the stuffing knocked out of them at Hillsboro.
TCs goal v Arsenal will live in my memory forever, probably my favourite ever goal, was sat in the Butler Street not far from where he hit it.
I too hated Peter Story with a passion.
Meadow Lane, I was going games with my mates back then, we arrived in Nottingham in 2 cars at 11am, found a pub with a pool table and a chippy and a bookies close by, sorted.
I still miss the Old Vic and wish we'd never moved.

I have some vague memories of Wembley in 72 but remember Meadow Lane betterl. How the hell we all got in is a mystery. I remember a few people listening to their radios to see how Sunderland were going on I think and then us scoring near the end of the match.

Missed WHU away in LC Semi (banks penalty save) but did the next one at Hillsborough 0-0) Went Ajax home and away (Toshers coach from Alsager) Mate of mine from Sandbach even went Kaiserslauten away the season before when we got dicked 4-0 and Big John Ritchie got sent off for chinning a big Yugoslav defender. Happy days

I was at Wembley 72, was just 8. Got the coach down with my dad and I remember it seemed to stop at every pub on the way back! ;D
Also at Hillsborough, although spent most of the second half with my dad on the concourse under the stands as he couldn't stand the excitiement and his blood pressure was through the roof!

I was there when we won the league cup. Travelled on a Bostocks bus from Shady Grove in Alsager and stood in Block H. Right up there as one of my best ever days.

Happy Days!
As an 11 year old I went down on the train with my dad and remember playing crib on the way back with my dad and these 2 strangers, all of whom were p***ed.
A complete contrast in emotions to 11 months earlier when we'd driven back from Hillsbrough after being shafted by that late Arsenal penalty and that bastard-in-the-black Pat Partridge. He must have had an earlier version of Fergie's watch!
My dad's sentiments on Peter Storey and Pat Partidge turned the Yorkshire air blue that day

Was at Wembley in 72 and other Wembley victories. Present at the FA Cup semis, Meadow Lane and the 3 -2 against Leeds. Also worth a mention is Stan's return to Stoke and promotion with Stan. When the crowd increased from a few thousand to a full house for Stan's first match I got the bug big time.
Best mental - I can't decide between Meadow lane and Smithy's winner against Leeds. The 4th against West Ham away when 3-0 down at half time is close behind. I cannot place Eastham's at Wembly here as I could only get tickets in the Chelsea end so celebrations had to be toned down.

My Grandad died in Feb 72. Lifelong Stoke supporter and had tickets for the final.
My nan had a bit of a scramble of relatives turning up at the front door saying things like "Dunner bury Harold in his suit!"
Didn't go to Wembley, but have strong memories of being in Stoke by the town hall to welcome the bus back.
My first few games included Ajax home, and that epic against Leeds in 74(?) when they were unbeaten for 23 games, and we came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. I lost a bobble hat my Nana had knitted for me. Jumped up with me scarf behind me head and knocked it about 5 rows down.
Think the Ajax game could have been my first night match. still gets the hairs on the back of your neck when you se that green pitch under the lights at night.

Have just spoken to old man mustard and he has just been back in the seventees for half hour. Mentioned alot of games but Birmingham away, Jimmy G scoring two seemed to stand out. He went to all the semis, and said 'Waddo put Mahoney right back instead of Marsh and went at em'. At West Ham it was raining house bricks apparently.

Regarding the two FA Cup semi defeats does anybody know why we played a 3rd place play off game in 1971/72 against Birmingham but we didn't play Everton in a 3rd/4th play off game in 1970/71.The FA launched this in 69/70.

We beat Everton 3-2 at Selhurst Park, the night before the FA Cup Final. We lost on penos to Brum after a 0-0 draw in a curtain raiser August match at St Andrews

Cheers March4, I knew about the Birmingham game but could not find anything on the Everton game. The penalty defeat against Birmingham meant we were the first team to lose a FA Cup fixture on penalties. I believe that we are the only club to have played twice in 3rd/4th place play off games.
