I noticed Jonathan Pearce say he only "grudgingly admired" the Swiss whereas Mick Mcarthy said he did admire them as "theres more than one way to win a game and at the end of the day its the win that counts, nothing else"
Good lad is Mick, mad as a box of frogs like...

Our draw against the USA isn't looking too bad is it... I thought it was a good result, USA have some really talented players. The result seems even better now know ;D I still can't believe Switzerland have beaten spain ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/ibnJJzaA6ZhfTOIekEAf.gif)

I couldn't believe the pessimism after our draw against the USA. We were the better side and if we can't beat Algeria and Slovenia then we don't deserve to progress. It was a solid result.
I was only watching the Spain game online, but am I right in thinking Pique handled the ball just before the goal? It could have been even worse for them, as it would have been a certain red card!!

It would have been a very harsh handball (if it was handball at all) - Ball took about 3 deflections before it was poked home. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/KYqg3pYeaerc5lD_P7BR.gif) ah

It would have been harsh, but if (hypothetical, I know) the Swiss were denied a goal because of it, I think Webb would have had to have given the penalty and a red. Hey ho, who cares? Switzerland 1-0 Spain. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/KYqg3pYeaerc5lD_P7BR.gif)

My feelings exactly. I think it was 8th against 14th or something like that. Forwards scored, defense kept a clean sheet. King and Green being big downers but all in all not a bad start.

I like the Guardian verdict on Spain's performance
But this was pass-them-to-death football without end product and unless Spain can remedy that it could be another demoralising World Cup, and a long and tortuous inquest.
;D ;D

It could have been MUCH worse. I was fearing the US. The problem is that the English media whip up this frenzy surrounding the World Cup and the whole nation expects us to breeze past all sides.
As they say, there aren't any easy international games these days. Just ask Brazil and Spain.

Can't see us losing on friday really. England should finish top of the group with united states finishing second.

Spain are a bit like Arsenal, all tippy tappy pretty football with no guts.
Whereas we are just shite.

Spain were desperately unlucky IMO. The lion's share of possession, plenty of chances created (or at least enough to win the game comfortably), and a collection of freak deflections that resulted in conceding. They need to tighten up defensively, certainly, but offensively they'll be fine.
Nothing wrong with their football at all.
