I seem to recall Leeds United making the play-off final in 2006 and being relegated in 2007.
I am not saying that is going to happen to Stoke City but it serves as an example of comparative success one season not automatically being followed by the same or greater success the following season.
The old adage still holds true. You are only as good as your next game or, in this case, the next season.
After all that has been achieved this season, it would be a crime to miss out on promotion. Archiesdad is right, Stoke fans are too willing to accept a modicum of success when they should be demanding REAL success.
A mid-table finish season after season will do me fine when we are in the Premiership. But in this division, and for a club like Stoke City, it is just not good enough. We need promotion.

1992/93 that's what you call a "great "season So ArchiesDad, let me make sure I understand correctly ..... you think it is better to win League 1 than to be challenging for the top of the Championship? ............. OooooooKay Dallas, As most everyone on the thread has said, we will all be gutted if we don't get promotion (and me if we don't go up as champions! ), BUT, it is still a better season than any in the last long long while.

one word you said there .."challenging"
I prefer "winning"

I'd still rather be "challenging" for a place in the Premiership than "winning" a place in the Championship. Wouldn't you?

well.... one thing's for certain, unless you had "won" a place in the Championship you couldn't "challenge" for a place in the Premier.

banksie, I'm a bit perplexed by your naming the thirteen players who "will all be at the club next season - unless we sell them". The last four words are the important ones and are the reason why we have taken so long for last season's best defence in the division to be replaced and still awaiting leadership and teamwork. Next week-end is crunch time, as ithe Watford match is a seven pointer, six points because of our respective positions and one for the re-alignment of goal difference.

True, surrey. I just don't see that many of them likely to be sold; Ric and Lawrence the only two who i would think would attract biggish money, maybe dickinson or wilkinson the only likely to leave through not enough first team football, but whelan, cort shawcross and diao have all only recently signed. I was much more optimistic about us getting rid of parkin, pericard, broomes, ant jr etc in fairness! I think all this time in the top 6 will have made us a bit more attractive too as another sign of progress, and consequently we are maybe less likely to sell.
having said that, without fuller and lawrence we look very ordinary indeed.
crunch time it is indeed, see you at watford!

don't talk silly, that's not what I said...
Some of you lads think it will be "great" season even if we fail to get promoted.
I don't ..... plain and simple.

youve just said that youd rather have the 92/93 season than this season? A title in a lower league rather than challenging to get with the elite? Or were you just talking bolox?

Tonight is the BIGGEST game of the season for me, Norwich is a tough venue and they have a decent home record and we'll probably play in front of a bumper gate, the vast majority of whom will following Norwich of course.
Its the biggest game for me because its our first real test of character having had a wobble and its also TPs biggest test thus far as he probably has to tweak his favoured line up and put a few noses out of joint.
Win tonight and I think we're in for a good run in. A draw isnt disastrous. A loss will be. I know we can lose tonight and still go up but in real terms if we are serious about first or second spot we simply cannot lose.
Watford on paper looks bigger, as does Bristol at home, but if we're to have a really great season we have to beat teams like Norwich who are in the bottom half of the league. We seemingly turn up in the more glamarous fixtures only to fumble the ball against teams we should beat, ie PNE, QPR & Burnley.
Win tonight and the momentum is back with us and we can all start believing again. Lose and I think we're destined for the play-offs.
Fuck, I'm nervous. Mind on lads. No fuck ups. Be bold Tone!!!
TP needs to be bold and aggressive/offensive with his line up !!!

In terms of sheer excitement, the92/93 season was my favourite ever as a Stokie. The football was exciting and you just expected us to win every game. There were some cracking away followings plus the buzz of the local derbies. Of course it wasn't as important but it was still absolutely superb. I would love Steino up front for us tonight the guy was fuckin fantastic.

we need to have this discussion again on May5th or May25th....
see what the situation is then and comment accordingly.
I know one thing..... when we lost in the play-offs in 1996, (when we were in the second tier)..... I certainly don't look back on it as a "great" season. Just crushing disappointment and feeling totally gutted.
Contrast that with, as Greenhoff has pointed out above, the total joy and fulfilled satisfaction of winning promotion(in the third tier).
You may have felt different, so be it.

Archiesdad i felt dissapointment then because we were playing shite teams week in week out and to not gain promo then was crap!
Now we are a totally different proposition,we are a team looking to gain promotion to the premierleague and id say deservadley so,with a chairman whose put his money where his mouth is and a manager who has spent wisely! I will repeat my sentiments-- it will be a great season if we gain promotion but also a great season if we dont. we will have built the foundations for an even better push next season!!! I have been a st holder at stoke for 21 seasons so i know what bad seasons are all about and it aint this pal!!
