Derby County have just announced debts of 34M! Considering they are on the brink of Div 2, that debt has got to be just as bad as Leeds. I wonder which "BIG name" will be the first to go? cheers Spider

Spider are you forecasting a headline 'Cotterill replaces Burley at cost cutting Derby' They've got no other 'big names' to offload! Pity I didn't train as Legal Administrator .........is there still time? 2004/5 will be a busy year for those that have!

If I was a Derby fan I'd be mightily pissed off now. I mean what on earth did they get for their 34M???? I can hardly name a single player worthy of a mention that they had and I can't remember them more than being also-rans in the Premiership. At least a Leeds fan could argue they were in the running at some point.
I wonder where Mr Ravenelli & Mr Gregory are hiding these days???

Spider, more like where are the board? they are the ones that sanction all that money to be spent.
And some people still cannot see why the board we have will not go down the spend spend spend route.

Its a very fine line between careful investment and blowing it all. Forest, Wednesday, Bradford, Derby & Leeds have all got it wrong. Charlton are about the only ones to have got it right.
I say follow the Charlton example! ;D

I'm guessing that whilst in the Premier their debt was hefty but managable but when they went down it meant they had to honour Premier League contracts on 1st division income and on it goes.

You're right Joe. That's why clubs that get promoted from Division One are introducing contracts which include a two tier salary - one for when the club is in The Prem and one for if they go down to Division One again.
Clubs are slowly learning the lesson.
But the problem is that so-called bigger clubs and bigger players are not willing to accept this. You might get some Wolves and Pompey players now that are new to The Prem accepting those terms. However, if these clubs ever establish themselves in The Prem then players will want a substantially better contract.
So if you get relegated after 3-4 seasons, as Derby did, then you really are stuffed cos the wage bill will be astronomical by that point.

Whats even more incredilble, if you look at there transfer dealings, is they have since getting promoted in 1995/6 actually made £21M or there abouts in PROFIT on transfers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They spent £22M , but Sold £43M worth of talent. I expect that debt includes the Stadium, which I expect cost simliar amount to ours, till they expanded it. I reackon its because this Pickering fella, was acting as a gaurentour on all these loans, and now isn't .. or they are infact Directors Loans he made to them, thats now causing the problems. Looks like the spunked a big wedge of dosh on wages ;D www.soccerbase.com/footballlive/?MIval=transfers_by_team&teamid=747
