A very gifted player who had that rare ability to control the tempo of a game. There does seem to be a flaw in his character as to why he never really played for a top side, he was certainly capable. So talented in fact that he made the game look very simple and easy - which on here leads to people believing him to be lazy and half hearted. Chamberlain got the same criticism.

Clive Lewis is too much of a virtue signaller for me. Trouble is, that rules out virtually every candidate, even Lisa Nandy, who I think is their best bet overall.
My advice would be to
1. Drop virtue signalling. 2. Stop pandering to whoever you think is the latest "victim" and instead try to appeal to the community as a whole. 3. Concentrate on core Labour values, like supporting the NHS and public services. 4. Don't promise too much, too soon. 5. Ask the people who voted Tory, and/or couldn't vote for Labour why this was the case. 6. Formulate policies around them. 7. Pick a leader who people can relate to and trust. 8. Recognise the need for control of immigration.
Then, depending on the Tory performance in government, they could win an election.
Trouble is, are they prepared to do even half of those things?

He's seen as a key figure in actively stopping Brexit. Won't play well up North. OK, but is he anymore Remain than Long-Bailey or Starmer who both seem to get plenty of mentions? Looks and sounds more accomplished leader material than others imo. So that's why I wonder what I'm missing? Old enough to have the nous and off a well know family. Apologies if it looks like I'm raking shit in someone else's stable, not intended. Just looking at it from the Labour Party supporters point of view. Oh, he's a very good speaker and very intelligent, so he could be a long term shout.

Who are you leaning towards, Sheiky? There isn't an outstanding candidate mate, which isn’t that surprising considering how long they’ve been out of office and the internal splits they’ve had. That’s not saying someone won’t grow into it. Starmer is the most finished article, politically wise and in terms of slickness but as the arch remainer, and as responsible as most for the election defeat, he’s surely poison? It may be identity politics type bollocks but I think it’s fairly obvious a woman would play better against, Johnson and his natural bullying and sense of superiority style, than a man. Phillips just doesn’t cut it for me and I’m against those who refused to serve under Corbyn or plotted against him because why would you trust them? That pretty much leaves Long-Bailey who I’m not enamoured with. Nandy fails the loyalty test but seems fiercely independent and could be a Northern vote winner. My Politics has most in common with Clive Lewis I would say but he hasn’t got a chance. So in answer to your question, I don’t know mate! It will probably be opeartion 'Stop the Blairite' for whoever gets my vote in the end. There was too much cream on the cake last time but anyone who wasn't proud of the intent of the last Labour manifesto can do one as far as I'm concerned. So no Owen Smith / Rachel Reeves dream ticket, then?

Looking from the outside and with no axe to grind, why is Hilary Benn not getting a mention? I remember him speaking with passion and belief a few months back in a Brexit debate. No doubt I'm missing something here? He's seen as a key figure in actively stopping Brexit. Won't play well up North.

It's an added caveat that's surprised no one but strangely wasn't mentioned just 7 days ago and a caveat that will almost certainly apply post Brexit Possibly. Maybe they are thinking ahead and when they do introduce it they will do it by saying this was only possible because we have managed the economy so well. Maybe though their speech writing team fucked up. Or maybe, as you suggest, it’s an insight into the evil reality of Tory rule. Whatever the reason, they will do it. It’s too high a profile for them not to do it. The good thing about their big majority is that they have no excuses not to deliver the goods, now. They have to, for the survival of their party. They will never get a better chance to ensure it.

But even if you believe that, labour just suffered a colossal defeat with him at the helm, the sooner he's gone the sooner Labour can move on. No one can survive a defeat like he did and of course he has to go but this acceptance that Johnson offers anything at all to his new voters in particular is utterly ridiculous. Election night is barely cold and he's already rowed back from minimum wage commitments, rowed back from workers right commitments and threatened to ban the right to strike in certain sectors. Whoever Labour elect next they need to make it clear that this type of right wing twattery is wrong and will be fought in the corridors of Westminster and on the streets. That's not left wing, that's just common decency. Who are you leaning towards, Sheiky?

I think he'd benefit from the physical presence of Zonze, and his ability to get around the pitch, meaning he's not required to do the running as much. People always say he's done it for Wales, but he's got better players around him. I think that's true, and discipline doesn't seem quite the problem for them, does it? I don't think all our midfield fell apart because of Allen. I just don't think he's good enough to carry it. N'Zonzi was. Everyone in the Wales set up seems to know their job, that much is true. What it's always needed is for someone to get hold of him and tell him to be that same disciplined player or drop him when he isn't. If that had happened I genuinely don't think we'd be in anything like the shit we are now. I agree with you. It's bizarre how that hasn't happened.

The mask is slipping. Why was he even in the Commons the other day? An interim leader would have been a better idea. was wondering that myself, he should be gone by now, why is he sticking around ? For more humiliation, judging by that recent Commons performance.

For sure, Whelan played his part. I just think Allen would have looked better than he has, next to N'Zonzi, that's all. I'm not sure how. Would that have made him more disciplined, which is the main problem? I think he'd benefit from the physical presence of Zonze, and his ability to get around the pitch, meaning he's not required to do the running as much. I take Tox's point about discipline, but I would like to have seen Allen next to N'Zonzi to see how good he actually is. Whelan had that benefit, and also Delap complimented him. Allen got a legs gone Whelan to work with and a piss weak Woods. I do think he tries to do too much to compensate for some team inadequacy at times. Having said all that, when people were talking stupid money for Allen I would have taken it, and the same goes for Butland. I expect an instant transformation if he goes now, and us to suddenly stop teams cutting through us. Maybe then we'll truly know where the blame lies. I know you have a weird thing about Whelan but he benefited Nzonzi as well as vice versa. Whelan has been a better player for Stoke than Allen because he was disciplined and did the job that was expected of him. For sure, Whelan played his part. I just think Allen would have looked better than he has, next to N'Zonzi, that's all.

The people who have been covering up for these scum bags need prosecuting as accessories to the crime's these twats have committed, there is evidence that many of these paedophiles had been reported to the authorities however for some inexplicable reason they didn't act on the information/reports, the fact is that most of the scum involved in raping these girls are from Pakistani heritage maybe has stopped them been arrested for many years, we as a society and in particular those in authority have let these vulnerable children down, there should be a national enquiry with no stone unturned to find these perverts wherever they are. Couldn't agree more Carps Well said Don't alienate guaranteed voters.

I'm not sure it is a fact that it would take him five minutes to get another club - if that was true he'd have been off like a shot when we were relegated? For me the 'doing jobs others should be doing' is the cause of the problem - his undisciplined running around means we lose our shape and gaps open us, plus off the ball he frequently doesn't do his own job in terms of tracking runners or pressing the ball. When he's good he's very good but I think trying to find a role for him has caused way more problems than it's solved over the years. If this is the case, it would be interesting to see the effect on our team if he held station and let others cover the gaps. I suspect we'd still lose goals, but then at least Joe doesn't get the blame. Have always said his best position is part of a two-man holding midfield, but he needs a good passing DM alongside him while he breaks up play in his own patch of the field. Running around doing everyone's day jobs just detracts from his abilities. I take Tox's point about discipline, but I would like to have seen Allen next to N'Zonzi to see how good he actually is. Whelan had that benefit, and also Delap complimented him. Allen got a legs gone Whelan to work with and a piss weak Woods. He probably has been a victim of our circumstances to an extent but I would never say he was the cause of them. The guy never hides - if we had had half a dozen more with his attitude we wouldn’t be where we are. With regard moving on, he showed a commitment to the cause aswell as maintaining continuity in his home life. The moment he expresses a desire to go there will be Championship and even some PL clubs knocking on our door. I’m sure of it. I wonder if he'll "ruin" the next midfield he joins?

Labour really do seem to be missing the point with the aftermath of the election. Each day the noise around their policies being sound grows louder. I think it’s a matter of time before Corbyn is blamed fully and made a scapegoat and they claim the policies were great. They need a bloody good look at themselves, but if they think the way ahead is to peddle the same old shit with the same type dismissing their traditional support then long may it continue. Boris must be pissing himself. The left have decided that the reason for their defeat is down to the country not appreciating their stance on Brexit combined with the media character destruction of Corbyn. The answer to them is very clear - Corbyn maybe dead but his ideas live on. The moderates in Labour don’t agree with this. But they are two weak to do much about it. So the Ayes to the Left have it. I suspect Johnson is quite happy with this scenario. A few questions, Partick, if I may? Who would you go for as leader? Who would the Tories fear most? Who is the most likely dream ticket?

I don’t think Boris needs the help of this mob to secure his position. Anyway, I don’t think you need to be overly concerned about this story. Unlike Labour who have allowed their party to be overtaken by the far left (actually sold it to them for £3), the Tories won’t be selling out their party to these pricks. Looks like the gangster in Porridge! Grouty, wasn't it?

The problem with denouncing these cunts is it easy then to have an islamaphobia tag thrown at you. Yes there are paedos of every colour and race but the way we keep hearing of these pakistani grooming gangs suggests so thing is engrained in them almost an epidemic How can you not appear racist if you say there is a problem with Pakistani gangs all over the country systematically grooming and abusing and raping young white girls Enrichment Indeed. Hardly talked about in the media, either. Goes against the "immigration and multiculturalism is 100% good" mantra that MPs espouse.

Using a child lying on a floor in a hospital (possibly faked) for political gain but ignoring hundreds of white girls groomed and abused in labour heartlands Another possible reason for abandoning Labour. Much faux outrage over letterboxes, mind.

I blame other before Corbyn on that one though........ Corbyn is history. But Corbyn’s Labour isn’t. The leadership will determine if his policies continue on. My expectation is Labour will stay on the course he set. Whether that is a wise thing will be determined at the next election. I suspect it will means they will be defeated again. Burgon was putting everything down to Brexit on Politics Live today, despite a segment featuring Stokies saying it went far deeper than that. It seems they still aren't listening.
