I think we're now finding out why some west ham fans called him "the invisible man" pre sunderland last season he looked very promising, but he's just seems to have disappeared ever since, he's not aggressive enough and he never seems to want the ball.

He needs a good fooking rocket from TP in time for Saturday.

He owes us a performance. Poor after his sending off last year. Least effective player for us on Saturday. Tonight can't have been easy but he needs to produce something soon.

anonymous tonight for me which was a real shame because at home to Liverpool he looked a different player.
Doesn't look either fit or totally happy to me

Gotta agree with the sentiments here. He's missing presumed drowned at the moment.

Aside from his debut and 30 good minutes stretched over the rest of his time here, he's been anonymous. A massive disappointment. Gutless challenge for their 3rd goal tonight as well. Julian Clary would've made more of an attempt to cut the ball out.

1st half he was are only outlet he won maybe 3-4 throw ins and also bout 2-3 free kicks. 2nd half he was quieter but he was alot better than most out there. Please tell me what you expect from him? do you expect him to some how pick the ball up and beat 3-4 men? Since he joined we have played some great counter attacking football, he gets alot of grief but please tell me what you expect of him??

Is it though ? west ham fans seemed to think the same when he played for them.

I think it is, we never give him the ball. First half against Burnley when we were giving him the ball he caused them problems and looked good. Second half of the game it was hooftastic and he was anonymous. He is an old fashioned winger who needs the ball playing to his feet. He will not get that here. And wingers drift in an out due to the nature of the position I think. We do need back up for him and Lawrence though. And half decent back up at that.

It was a briliant turn by Gerrard and it just totally bamboozled him.

I'd have to see it again. It was a dodgyish stream and I was on my fourth can. Your Honour, I'll withdraw the 3rd goal Julian Clary-ish defending accusation if I'm convinced by MOTD evidence

You're defence of Matty is admirable bayern, but I'm not sure you can put his poor showing down to how Stoke play. The way West Ham play is about as different to Stoke as you can imagine, however many of the criticisms of Etherington that are now beginning to surface from Stoke fans are IDENTICAL to those raised by Hammers fans during his last couple of years at Upton Park. Some sections of the crowd down there gave him the nick name 'bottle job', not nice, but a very large number of West Ham fans thought the lad had completely lost it way before it was even mentioned that he was on his way to Stoke. EDIT: Oops I've just seen your post Serps, sorry.

But when he has the ball to me he looks good. Against Burnley he ran at them and tried to take them on when he could. I just think it's a bit harsh on the lad because the way we play does stifle people-Whitehead is another one who to me looks stiffled by the way we play. I'm sticking up for Whitehead now! ;D

It's frustrating because he's clearly got talent and has pace, but he just doesn't seem motivated enough, At the minute though he has to play because we don't have anyone to come in for him, but i think TP would do well to look for someone to come in a push him for his place.

Played out of position tonight on the wrong wing so Tone could accomodate his best friend Cresswell.....Plus we dont give him the ball enough to his feet.....

We have wide men and we simply dont play them - no concept of playing out of defense at all Matty is a good player with bugger all service
Stoke is hoof to front player, knock down and look for runners on - sad but true

"Against Burnley he ran at them and tried to take them on when he could. "
Bayern, I often agree with you, but on Saturday he had a few chances to really go at his man and failed to do so. Ok, we don't get him the ball often enough, but when he does get it in good positions he doesn't do enough.
To be honest, I wouldn't have minded Pugh getting a run tonight insteado f Ethers or (if he had to drop him) Lenny - ANYTHING BUT CRESS.
I feel sorry for the 3k who have spent plenty of coin and yet again seeing Cress start a big game. He puts no more shift/effort in then Pugh or Tonge, and is not as good a player.

First half I thought he did if I'm being honest, maybe not as often as we'd all like but he did have a go. And in the first half him and Higgi actually played as a partnership down the left once or twice! Second half he was anonymous but the whole team needed a boot up the backside after the second half.

We should have got Hunt in instead, he would have fitted into Pulis system better, Pulis will eventually lose patience in him and he will be a dead man walking, unfortunately players like him dont have their place in a Pulis system.

I know this is a crazy idea but maybe we could try playing a left winger actually on the left wing This playing players out of position is really pissing me off now

Not a great decision to bring him to the club then by the Guardian of Peter's Money? As most people know on here i am not the biggest fan of Pulis's tactics never have been but he kept us in the division and you have to give him credit for that. However unless we start changing the way we play away from home we will come a cropper very soon because i doubt we will win as many home games this season. Stephen Hunt would have been ideal for us leaving Ethers on the bench to use his speed if we need to break down defences in the last 20 mins.

I also thought he was one of our better players. Played many a ball through and kept challenging and running up and down the wings.

It shows our lack of depth when we have no real injury concerns and players playing out of position.
