Kilby reveals why Whelan deal was KO'd By Gavin Gibbon Comment | Read Comments (1)
BURNLEY chairman Barry Kilby has revealed the club missed out on Glen Whelan because of his wage demands.
The Clarets board has been the subject of criticism from fans following the lack of transfer activity in the recent window - with only the loan signings of veterans Andy Cole and Stanislav Varga, and a similar deal for Arsenal starlet Mark Randall, while other targets failed to materialise.
Derek Riordan remained with Celtic, although it is understood a deal with the Scottish midfielder would only have gone through had striker Kyle Lafferty gone the other way; Barry Robson opted to move to the Scottish champions and Whelan signed for Championship rivals Stoke City.
But Kilby strongly denied any lack of ambition from the Turf Moor outfit, especially regarding the Whelan deal.
He said: "Everyone talks about the fee of £500,000 for Glen Whelan, but if he had come in he would have broken our wage structure. His agent was working away and he knew how to play it in this frantic period and Stoke went in for him and are really going for it, throwing money around.
"Whelan's wages didn't make it economical for us to take him."
Meanwhile, Kilby said the Clarets have opened up negotiations with wing wizard Wade Elliott about extending his Clarets contract.
Elliott, who was last season's player of the year, has been in blistering form in the current campaign and is riding high at the top of the Championship's assist charts.
Kilby said: "Contract talks are ongoing with Wade Elliott and they have been since the new manager came in.
"Hopefully we can get him landed sooner rather than later."

Pay peanuts & get... n'all that though eh?
Bollox to Burnley - who's this Wade Elliott fella is he any good can he play left if needed?
If so chuck some money at him TP & that'll really hack 'em off.

A good read. He could just be saying that to appease the fans but I believe he’s being honest; a lot of teams in the league simply can’t compete with the spending we have made over the past month or so.
Never thought I’d say that either!!

Yes indeed, good on you ol' son.
You have to suspect though that, that other Chairman type hasn't a clue:
Derek Riordan remained with Celtic, although it is understood a deal with the Scottish midfielder ...
...err, isn't he a striker?
Apols in advance if he isn't Barry but i'm pretty sure he is.
p.s. & whatever he says, they're just being tightwads i reckon.

May be wrong but didn't Gifton say he trippled his wages when he went to Burnley ? Have we really come on so far since then :-)

I heard this rumor elsewhere. Frightening pay packet, compared to our normal terms, apparently.
And I agree; name me the last time you read an article - anywhere - stating Stoke outbid some other club on wages. I bet Scholsey is still lying down in a darkened room!

I feel as if I'm travelling through some kind of a time warp here. We seem to have magically transposed from a bunch of rag-bag paupers in a poor deprived working-class area, constantly getting 'blown out of the water' by all in sundry to the nouvo rich, playboys of the division! Can't quite work it out, but long may it continue!

Perhaps we were probably expecting to pay double that for him not long back so we decided to be a little more generous with wages.

Kilby is only using the same excuse Pulis has for the last 5 seasons.

SIOCH, A Burnley fan on their Mad board says that he was told that Whelan is on £10k per week and £5k win bonus. Considering we play Wolves on Sat, Saints on Tues, and Scunthorpe on Friday let's hope Glenny boy is taking home £25k for next week.

PC throwing money around.....!!!..he doesnt...its been just some good business of players sold and new ones signed. The investment is still not huge. Not complaining of course as the decisions have been spot on. Lets hope PC keeps the checque book out and the pen poised for a loan forward

It's probably likely, then, that our 2 top earners will be on over £1m-a-season between them And we could have 3-4 others not far behind. Seems a long way from when the entire wage bill was supposedly less than £4m?

Completely unrelated but true; I once found Barry Kilby's son sleeping on my sofa using a tea-towel as a blanket.
Now if that doesn't highlight the poverty in Burnley I don't know what does.
