MARTIN... Cant remember his last name, but lived on Caravan site up Brown Lees..He always had tranny radio held close to his ear, and walked up and down the same bit of road from morning till night chuckling to himself...When the batteries went flat he would curse and swear, and for some strange reason he thought his radio had died..just over the fence where he walked was a big field with lots of ariels coming out of the ground.. Thats where he buried all his radios..

"Tommy Porthole" from Alsager.
Used to sit in the local barbers with a packet of smoked ham.
Supposedly an ex-sailor, known for walking into co-op and shouting "Take whatever you like lads, they dont give a fuck it's christmas"
Forever immortalised in the folk lore of Alsager

This is a question from my (older) brother, they're more his age group and older than mine - does anyone from Wolstanton/May Bank know what happened to Screw Boulton and Jake? I remember Screw Boulton for sure think he lived back of Morris Square. My next door neighbour on Silverdale Road was once threatened by him and I recall my neighbours dad, knee high to a grass hopper, taking Screw out on the Marsh the next day and leaving him battered and bruised. He never ventured our way again. Also remember a character called "Tick Tock Freddy" who walked up and down Wolly high street and could often be seen checking the time of his pocket watch against the Clock above Staniers Chemist. Always pulling his leg that his watch was wrong when we asked him the time at which he would walk off sulking. Harmless bloke though. Don't know what became of any of them. Edit: just remembered also the "Parkie" who patrolled Wolstanton Marsh and hung around in evenings by the swings opposite the Wulstan. He would chase us off them because they were only for the kids. He wore a peaked cap with "Park Patrol" or something like that.

Stone...The Dwarf woman who used to have the Haberdashery up by langtry's. Someone once videoed her and dubbed some comedy music on it, very cruel, but quite funny. Talking of Langtry's , Dave Smithwick, huge Everton fan and a real piss head. Then there were the punks in Stone, I believe a couple of them topped themselves, also anyone remember "Elvis"...I think his name was Dave but he was convinced he was actually Elvis.

I always used to see him sat on his own at the bar in the Devonshire chatting absolute nonsense to anyone who'd listen. I remember when Princess Diana died and he had about 50 Union Jacks and England flags strewn all across his and his neighbours' houses.

It's where my Dad used to go and where I had my haircut as a kid. Proper 70's cool bloke with massive lamb chop sideburns, tan, dripping in gold, open shirt with hairy chest and zip up platform boots. He was a rate dude, full of stories. Funnily enough, I bumped into Joe and Nigel (another pair of longtime Stoke mad barbers from 'castle) at the game yesterday. Their shop, Boss's, is in the arcade between the Ironmarket & Merrial Street. Like Sid, those two are full of Stoke stories as well. Joe's superb handlebar moustache is about as cool as cool gets.

Was the Christadelphian Hall still there in the 80s. We used to pretend to be interested in being radicalised by them so we could play snooker and table tennis on Friday nights. Some right wierdos I tell thee. Christ hope you and Sal onner one else I've got some back pedalling to do. I went to Wooly Grammar in 60s before it became Wooly High School. Edit: just noticed this thread is 6 years old.???

There was an old parkie who worked out of a dark looking shed near the bottom gates of Penkhull park. We just knew him as "Onion" because his head looked like one. He would always give chase for...well nothing really.

We pretended to be radicalised in exactly the same way at the Gospel Tabernacle in Penkhull, just so we could get cups of tea and biscuits PLUS get our hands on their really sweet twelve string acoustic guitars for 30 minutes or so.
