I will read "tie me to the mast", thanks for the recommendation and yes i am genuine. As far as being a "johnny come lately" guilty as charged but you have to start somewhere I guess. One day i hope to get over to the "bear pit" although i think i also need to "road trip" to complete the Stoke experience. Seriously though, it is the fans that I think really put Stoke City FC on another level. You all were "mental" when that second goal went in and stayed faithful and loud even before when you were down 2-0. I really hope Stoke stays up, but if they don't I think it will be worse for the Premiership. The character and loyalty that are the trade mark of SCFC would be sorely missed by the EPL. Stoke are a throwback to the real glory days of the 1st Division when it meant something to follow a team through thick and thin. Now a days the Chelsea, ManU, and Liverpool corporate culture really sullies the reputation of the game in England. I understand the EPL is big business and you have to have that corporate mindset to succeed but I think you really miss out on the football experience of yesteryear as epitomized by Stoke. The highs and the lows that seem to be monopolized by Stoke though are priceless and really give the game meaning. Hooked for life in San Jose

That's the best post I've read in a long while. Well written, entertaining, thoughtful, perceptive and a quirky illustration of one of the unforeseen effects of our Premier League status in the wider world.
It ought to be printed in full in the Oatcake magazine.

Superb post Mailman, loved reading away. Coming from someone who was at Villa Park on Sunday, I can confirm it was one mighty mental when Whelen made it two each!

Welcome Mailman.
I'd advise you to Read "Tie me to the mast" by David Johnson. The best book about following Stoke City and Stoke on Trent.

'...Stoke was the most god forsaken locale in the United Kingdom and SCFC was damned for eternity.'
mailman, I hope you realise you just became an instant legend with that (every word's true, of course). ;D
Apart from all the other welcomes, welcome to the Oatie board, any problems please just PM me or one of the other mods. Now you've been insane enough to become a Stokie I really hope we get to see you at the Brit one day and we'll be lining up to show you every god forsaken detail of the locale we all love to death.

Superb post - welcome aboard it'll be abumpy ride - and you may be joining at the top of the ride!
Stoke originally played in the USA in the Summer of 1967 in Cleveland - they became Cleveland Stokers, playing 13 matches, all in red and white stripes!
The year after our reserve gaolkeeper paul Shardlow retunred to the Us and played a further Summer - before returning to Stoke - sadly he died in training due to a heart problem.
Columbus Crew are the modern equivalent of Cleveland Stokers.
Aston Villa IMHO was the best home and away mental versus Stoke, Last five minutes of each game will long live on in the memory along with Notts County (A) 1979 and Cardiff (A) 2002 happy days

You'll no doubt fit in very well if you ever do make it to over here. Stoke is also an attractive, forward thinking city founded by Spanish missionaries which has a Mediterranean climate and lies in the midst of an area famed for its technological innovation*.

Mailman, I have a friend who is about as anti "soccer" as it is possible to be. She is Welsh and a great fan of the oval ball game we play in the uk - Rugby. Her husband (who does like "soccer") borrowed my copy of "Tie me to the Mast" and she heard him laughing out loud as he read it. After he had finished it she started reading it one day after her husband went to work. She finished it over a couple of days and rang me up to say what a superb read it was and that, although Rugby remained her love, she could well understand why those of of who follow clubs like Stoke City love the club and the game with such a passion. I haven't got the book back yet - it is still being passed round her village having already done the rounds of her family.
I think you'll like it.
