Notts County and Stoke will have played against various clubs in the early days most of which no longer exist. Then, over the next few years other clubs were created many of which do still exist. These clubs plus Notts County and Stoke then formed the first national Football League.

Run run wherever you may be we are the lads from stoke city we are the lads in red and white we are the 2nd oldest team in the world not counting sheff utd because they werent forme under the professional regualtions of the 1863 agreement of the fa founding the rules for modern football as we know it and as soon as notts county go under were claiming the top spot, of course were not counting the foundations of the game we know as football, just the professional leagues we know of today
Block 19 could proabbly fit that in an average chorus of delilah

Make up your own tunes ... We're older than God's own pet dog And our trophy room has no bounty And we might be knackered around the knees But we're fitter than Notts County We've got no teeth and we've got no hair We've got Pericard, but we dont care We're tottering around on a zimmer frame Wondering how Cresswell gets a game..... We're the moaning old git for a neighbour Unfashionable and hated But we're old as F@ck in the Premier League Whereas Wigan are backdated

Yes Sheffield FC are the oldest team, followed closely by Sheffield Hallam FC (both play in the same league today, it's the oldest derby still being played in the world today), Notts County, then Stoke. There could be other clubs too, but these are the four oldest I know of. Sheffield FC kicked off in 1857, Hallam in 1860 (I think), Notts 1862 then of course us in 1863, although there is some debate on that, we could be as late as 1868, depending on who you believe.

Whoe the hell did Sheffield FC play against for the first 3 years then until Hallam decided to give it a go? Surely with 3 years extra training they must have won that 2 team league!!
Sheffield FC Played 2 Won 2 Draw 0 Lost 0 For 123 Against 7 Hallam Played 2 Won 0 Draw 0 Lost 2 For 7 Against 123
What a shit season!! ha ha

stokietomo - I would have thought it was fairly obvious that the early clubs played their early games against clubs which no longer exist. These clubs are not necessarily the oldest clubs in the world - but they are the oldest clubs still in existance.
