db, whether or not you have run away to the pub, this is an argument you are losing.
We all agree that Cresswell is too limited to play much of a role now everyone is fit, but give the lad some credit he played his part last season and has had to try and fit into a number of roles this.

Can people not see why he plays cresswell ?. Like when we played man city at home people sat behind me were slagging pulis and cresswell off to the max, last week we had 10men and trying to defend the game not bloody chaseing the game thats why he brought him on.
I do agree to some extent that he isnt the best of players and shouldnt start at sunderland tomorrow but if he does get behind the man and not slag him off he does his job which is work his bollocks off and chase the ball all over the pitch!!
Rant over.

March. I admit defeat.Your compelling reasoning was just too much for me:-
"He's OK in a back-to-the-wall performance"
"He's no good when we try to play a more expansive game"
"I can't imagine Cresswell playing tomorrow"
"Don't forget the job he did last season"
You win.
Cresswell deserves to be picked in front of Fuller, Camara, Lawrence and Kiston every time. (This was what the thread was about).

I don't think one person has argued he should be picked to start have they? They were just saying he doesn't deserve a lot of the abuse he gets from Stoke fans. I also didn't agree with your analysis that he did nothing against Liverpool and Man City, where I thought he played pretty well.

Nobody has stuck up for Cress more than me as he has been on the end of some astonishing stick on this message board, but that deosn't mean to say I think he should play. For me Liam HAS to start playing, he gives us loads of energy, works hard but also has the quality on the ball and is a genuine goal threat. People really should get off Cress' back, remember what he did last year for us and realise that he doesn't pick the team. My sentiments too - well said. I hope that he isn't in the starting 11, and think that Pulis can be for too stubborn sometimes, but Cresswell doesn't deserve some of the abuse he gets on here. P.S. db - does the title of this thread mean that it only applies to those with a religious belief?

There have been some solid performances from Cresswell this season, when we have been playing against vastly superior players. However, tomorrow we aren't and I can't imagine Cresswell starting. I have been trying to remember our outlook on away games this season. At Man City, Blackburn, Bolton, Spurs we pushed forward and were hammered. Against Wigan, Chelsea, Liverpool we sat right back and managed some form of containment. We also tried containment at ManU, Pompey etc and came unstuck. I think there might be a new approach tomorrow. The question is, will it show more attacking invention or will we retreat even further into our shells. We all know TP, so what will it be attack or defence, defence, defence? March we definitely DIDN'T push forward at Spurs, we went there with EXACTLY the same game plan as we did at Chelsea, the ONLY difference between the two games was that in the first half Spurs took their chances whereas Chelsea didn't. I wouldn't say that we particularly pushed forward against Bolton or Blackburn either, rather that the opposition in those matches weren't great and they allowed us to play a little more, a freak goal at the Reebok and a piece of total madness from Sonko at Ewood Park opened up the flood gates, however we have a SIGNIFICANTLY better starting XI available now than we had in either of those matches. I'll give you Man City, and to all intents and purposes we were much the better side until we switched off at the back just before and just after the break. We also attacked from the off against Boro, and were way, way on top until we shot ourselves in the foot with the sending off. For the first 30 minutes at the Riverside and the second 45 minutes at St. James' Park have been our best performances away from home this season. On the rare occasions when we have gone for it, the opposition haven't out played us in the centre of the park rather we've either shot ourselves in the foot stupidly or the defence has completely switched off. However compare the defence we have now to the one that played at Bolton. I feel physically sick at the thought of Cresswell's name being on that text at 2.30pm tomorrow. i think that's a very accurate appraisal when we sit back and adopt this negative approach we make average teams in this division look much better than they are i was fuming after the tottenham game, i thought the tactics were shambolic we have since got a vital win against man city and produced a rousing performance now it is up to the manager to show, from today, that he is learning from his mistakes. he just needs to pick his best team, a team that will be able to attack if he doesn't, and we produce yet another disastrous away performance as we have in nearly every game this season he'll deserve the stick he gets as for cresswell. he should be supported fully and not abused. it's the managers job to take the flak for selections
